Bill Treseler To Step Down as SF State's Head Men's Basketball Coach

Treseler Guided the Gators To Three Consecutive Trips to the CCAA Basketball Championships
SAN FRANCISCO--- Fifth-year head men's basketball coach Bill Treseler has announced that he is stepping down as the head men's basketball coach of the SF State Gators later this month. Treseler guided the Gators to their third straight non-losing season and third straight appearance in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Basketball Championships this past season and a 17-14 overall record. This was the first time since 1981-84 that the Gators have achieved both accomplishments.

“My decision is about giving my wife and sons the focus, time, and energy they deserve,” said Treseler. “Fortunately the program is in strong position to continue moving forward, we can all look forward to future exciting victories."

"This quest to build a consistent and competitive basketball program has been exciting and rewarding over the past five years,” said Treseler.  “I want to thank Dr. Simpson for his supportive leadership, sports information director Joe Danahey for his hard work on behalf of our players, and especially the student-athletes and coaches who made incredible commitment and personal sacrifice to make Gator basketball successful.”

SF State's 17 wins was the second time in three seasons, during Treseler's tenure that the Gators have recorded 17 wins. SF State finished the 2007-08 season with a 17-12 record and a third-place finish in the CCAA, their highest finish since joining the conference in 1998. Treseler was named the CCAA Coach of the Year by his peers and also was selected to coach the West team at the NABC All-Star Game in Springfield, Mass.

He also has coached five All-CCAA Players including a Freshman and Newcomer of the Year. Robert Hayes (San Diego, California, St. Augustine's)was named the 2007-08 CCAA Freshman of the Year and Marquel Hoskins (Beloit, Wisconsin, Reedley College) was named the 2009-10 CCAA Newcomer of the Year, both firsts by a Gator men's basketball player. Hayes also was named to the 2007-08 Second Team as well as the 2008-09 First Team, while Alex Thomas (Vallejo, California, Dominican University) was a two-time Second Team selection in 2007-08 and 2008-09. Hoskins was selected to the First Team All-CCAA this past season.

Treseler also had two players selected to the Academic All-CCAA Team in Phoenix O'Rourke (San Mateo, California, Junipero Serra) and Will Logan (Apple Valley, California, Apple Valley). O'Rourke was named to the 2007-08 Team, while Logan was a selection in 2008-09. They were the first two Gator men's basketball players named to the Academic All-CCAA Team.

“Bill Treseler has been a tremendous asset to the University, the SF State Athletic Department and the men's basketball program,” said SF State Director of Athletics Dr. Michael J. Simpson. “Through his efforts and diligence, the young men under his tutelage have demonstrated exemplary growth, maturity, and success.”

Over the past three seasons, the Gators have won 48 games, their highest victory total during a three-year span since 1982-85 and ranks as ninth-best in school history. During that stretch, the Gators have earned their best CCAA finish ever, received votes in the national top 25, won four tournaments, and recorded four historic victories. This past season, the Gators were in the top 15 in the nation for most of the season in field goal percentage defense, scoring defense, and 3-point field goal percentage defense.

Treseler resides in Albany, California, with his wife Dina and two sons Billy and Dominic.
