UC San Diego Snaps Gators' Winning Streak at 9

SAN FRANCISCO--- SF State’s softball team had their nine-game winning streak snapped this afternoon by sweeping a conference doubleheader from the Gators 6-1 and 3-1 at SF State’s Softball Field. With the loss, SF State falls to 9-5 overall and 7-3 in the CCAA while UC San Diego improves to 10-8 overall and 8-6 in the CCAA.
 
In game one, Camille Gaito (7-3) picked up the victory for the Tritons pitching six innings, giving up five hits and one run while striking out seven and walking just one. UC San Diego scored first in its half of the third as Kris Lesovsky scored on a one-out double to center field by Kellin Haley after opening the inning with a lead-off double. 
 
The Gators tied the game in their half of the third inning on a two-out RBI single by Karolyn Gubbine (Richmond, California, Pinole Valley) which scored Rachael Kroneder (Pleasanton, California, Amador Valley). The score remained tied at one until the Triton fifth.
 
In the top of the fifth, the Tritons erupted for five runs on five hits with Nicole Saari’s two-run double down the left field line being the key hit of the inning for UC San Diego. Gaito and reliever Brittany Sheets shut down the Gators in the final three innings to take the 6-1 victory. 
 
Lesovsky and Katrin Gabriel had two hits apiece for UC San Diego to lead its hitting attack. Lesovsky also scored twice and Saari drove in two runs. 
 
Gubbine was 3-for-4 to lead the way for SF State and drove in its only run. Ashley Jackson (Vallejo, California, St. Patrick's-St. Vincent)(4-1) picked up the loss for the Gators, pitching 4.1 innings, giving up five hits and five runs (four earned) while striking out two and walking two.
 
Lesovsky opened up game two for UC San Diego with a lead-off home run in the top of the first inning to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. SF State tied the game at one in its half of the third inning. Jessica Delgado (Monterey, California, North Monterey)opened the third with a lead-off double and advanced to third on a single by Gubbine. Lea Cardenas (Sanger, California, Sanger) then was hit by a pitch with one to load the bases and Summer Powell (Rocklin, California, Rocklin ) also was hit by a pitch to drive in Delgado with the tying run. Tess Granath came in relief for Christine Zankich and got the next two batters to strike out ground out to keep the score tied at one.

The score remained tied at one until the Triton fourth when Katrin Gabriel scored on a RBI pinch-hit single by Katie Belanger to give the visitors a 2-1 lead. UC San Diego added an insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly Lesovsky.
 
Granath (1-1) recorded the win for the Tritons in relief, pitching 4.2 innings, giving up no hits while striking out seven and walking two. Once again, Lesovsky led the way for UC San Diego going 2 for 2 with two RBIs and a runs scored and Katrin Gabriel had two hits.
 
Vanessa Truan (San Jose, California, Leland) (1-1) picked up the loss for SF State, pitching seven innings, giving up seven hits and three runs while striking out two and walking three. 
 
The two teams will return the softball diamond tomorrow to finish off their four-game weekend conference series with a doubleheader starting at 11am at SF State’s Softball Field. Prior to the start of game one, the Gators will play recognition to the Military with a brief ceremony.
