NEW ORLEANS The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named San Francisco State’s Brittany Garrett (Hoover, Ala., Univ. of Southern Mississippi) to its Division II All-Academic women’s track and field team on Thursday for her efforts in the classroom and on the track. Garrett’s selection marked her second straight All-Academic award after she garnered the same distinction for the 2009 cross country season.

To qualify for the USTFCCA All-Academic track team, a student-athlete must have compiled a 3.25 cumulative grade point average and have met either the NCAA Division II indoor automatic or indoor provisional qualifying standard or participated in the NCAA Division II outdoor championships.

Garrett, a kinesiology major who completed her athletic eligibility this past spring, set an NCAA Division II indoor provisional qualifying time of 5 minutes, 3.78 seconds in the mile run at the University of Washington’s Husky Open on Feb. 13, which ranks second in school history. She also established a new Gator indoor record in the 3,000 meters at the same meet with a 10:08 clocking.

Garrett excelled during the outdoor season as well, recording an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time of 16:59.96 in the 5,000-meter run at UC Berkeley’s highly competitive Brutus Hamilton Invitational on April 23, which was a career-best and ranks second in school history. In addition, she posted the Gators’ third-fastest time of in the 1,500 (4:38.04) at the same meet.

Garrett completed her collegiate career with a fourth-place performance in the 1,500 (4:39.18) at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships on May 8, helping SF State match its highest finish (fourth) at the conference meet in 12 years of CCAA competition.
