SAN FRANCISCO – SF State's Department of Athletics conducted its annual awards banquet Wednesday on campus at Jack Adams Hall in the Cesar Chavez Student Center. The Gators presented eleven awards during the festivities, which also included a slideshow presentation and video highlights from the 2013-14 season.
Among the honors handed out was the Arete Award, which is given to a student-athlete who has earned a 3.0 or higher grade point average at SF State, completed an average of 12 units per semester, performed community service and also had an outstanding career in his/her respective sport. Jennifer Lewis was the recipient of this year's Arete.
The Male Athlete of the Year award was presented to wrestler
Isaiah Hurtado, while track and field athlete
Tiana Wills was named the Female Athlete of the Year.
The Newcomer Athlete of the Year Awards went to baseball pitcher
Cory Davis and women's basketball player
Katie Batlin.
The Freshman Athlete of the Year Awards were presented to wrestler
Jordan Gurrola and track and field athlete
Alex Jones.
The CCAA Dr. Hal Charnofsky Awards are presented to student-athletes who participate in a CCAA-sponsored sport and have distinguished themselves in the classroom and in the field of competition. This year's SF State recipients were men's basketball player
Calvin Otiono and volleyball player
Melissa Horton.
SF State also presented Phillip M. Evans Sportsmanship Scholarship which went men's soccer player
Hayden Roberts and women's soccer player
Allison Taylor.
