Floyd Wormley has been named this week's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Basketball Player of the Week for his performance this past week as announced by the conference office today. Wormley has played a key role in the Gators' first 5-0 start since the 2008-09 season.
The Sacramento native averaged 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocked shots in the Gators' 2-0 week. He also shot 73.6% from the field including 75% from three-point land while connecting on 6 of his 7 attempts from the charity stripe.
He started the week scoring a team high 18 points in leading the Gators to an 84-73 win over Holy Names University on Tuesday, November 24. Wormley went 7 of 10 from the field including knocking down his only attempt from beyond the arc. He also was a perfect three-for-three from the charity stripe while grabbing 6 rebounds, dishing out four assists, blocking one shot and recording a steal in the Gators' non-conference win.
Wormley then came back this past Saturday, November 28 and scored a team high 15 points in the Gators' 73-72 overtime win over crosstown rival, Academy of Art, at Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco. He grabbed 7 rebounds and dished out two assists and recorded two steals while going 5-for-9 from the field and two-for-three from beyond the arc.
The senior post player assisted on what proved to be the game-winning jumper off the hands of
Coley Apsay with 1:15 left in overtime. He also connected on a three off an assist from Apsay at the 1:54 mark in overtime that put the Gators' within one (72-71) of the Urban Knights.
For the season, Wormley is averaging 12.0 points and 5.2 rebounds per game while shooting 70% from the field and 88.2% from the charity stripe. He also has dished out 14 assists, blocked four shots and recorded 8 steals for the Gators, under the direction of sixth-year head coach
Paul Trevor.
This is the first time that a Gator men's basketball player has been named CCAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week since the 2012-13 season. During that season, the Gators had two player of the weeks for the weeks of November 19-25 and February 18-24 for James Albright and Decensae White respectively.
SF State will open up CCAA play this weekend with a pair of home games against Chico State and Stanislaus State. The Gators will first face Chico State, who was ranked eighth in the nation in last week's NABC/NCAA Division II poll, this Friday, December 4 at 7:35pm. This game will be broadcast live on Comcast Hometown Network Channel 104. The first 500 SF State students with valid student ID will receive a Purple Out 2 t-shirt complimentary of the SF State Department of Athletics. The Gators will entertain Stanislaus State this Saturday, December 5 with a scheduled tip-off of 7:30pm.
Prior to both men's games this weekend, the Gator women will also host Chico State and Stanislaus State respectively. Tip-off for those games are set for 5:30pm PST.
