NEW ORLEANS – Five members of the No. 9 San Francisco State track & field team were named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) 2018 NCAA Division II All-Region team, the organization announced today.
Timarya Baynard,
Maya Cook,
Atiya Harvey,
Destiny Mack-Talalemotu and
Jazmine Smith earned the All-Region plaudit in six different events. It is the second-straight year SF State has put five student-athletes on the All-Region team.
"These women have had a phenomenal indoor season so far," boasts Head Coach
Kendra Reimer. "We know even bigger marks are possible at NCAA National Championships. I am very proud of our athletes and coaches, they have worked really hard to be the top-team on the West Coast."
Baynard, Cook, Harvey and Smith notched the top time in the nation this past weekend in the 4x400 with a 3:41.82 en route to their All-Region award. This is the second-consecutive year the indoor 4x400 has been represented on the All-Region team after Baynard, Harvey,
Vanessa Koontz and
Christine Moreno earned the recognition last season.
This is Baynard's second All-Region award after taking home the hardware last year in the 400m and 4x400. This season she adds the 200m to her All-Region resume after posting a 24.60 at the Dr. Martin Luther King Collegiate Invitational, which is a provisional qualifying mark. She holds the top-time in Division II in the 400m with a 54.66, which is another provisional qualifying mark for the sophomore.
Harvey's 7.66 in the 60m is a top-40 time in the nation and second-fastest time in program history. This past weekend at the BU Last Chance Meet she notched a 24.06 in the 200m, which is tied for the third-fastest time in the country and is a SF State record.
Mack-Talalemotu is named to the All-Region team for shot put and weight throw in which she holds both program records. She threw a 15.09m in shot put at the UW Open, the eighth-farthest mark in the nation this season, and holds the sixth-best distance in weight throw with a 19.61m.
In addition to the 4x400, Smith earns All-Region honors for the 400m where she ran a 56.00, the fourth-best time in the West Region.
The top-five individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region distinction, in addition to each of the members of the regions' top-3 relay teams. The regions used for this award – Atlantic, Central, East, Midwest, South, South Central, Southeast and West – match those used during the cross country season.
The Gators travel to Turlock, California for the Kim Duyst Invitational this Friday, which will be the first outdoor meet of the 2018 campaign. SF State will then head to Pittsburgh, Kansas for the NCAA Division II National Indoor Championships, which kick off on March 9.
