ALISO VIEJO, Calif. – Luisa Musika (Milpitas, Calif., Milpitas HS) took first place in both the discus throw and shot put on Saturday to lead the San Francisco State track and field team at the Soka Peace Invitational in Aliso Viejo, Calif. The Gators captured five event titles in all to go along with four runner-up finishes on the Soka University campus.
SF State claimed the top three spots in the discus throw as Musika posted a winning distance of 129 feet, 8 inches, followed by Lindsay Machado (Placerville, Calif., El Dorado HS) (124-09) and Cassie Freeman (Morro Bay, Calif., Cuesta JC) (121-09). Musika emerged victorious in the shot put as well with a toss of 40-04 and placed second in hammer throw with a heave of 148-02.
On the track, Carrie Thomas (Milpitas, Calif., Milpitas HS) won the 200 meters with a career-best time of 25.47 seconds, while Samantha Eggert (Lincoln, Calif., Del Oro HS) came away with the crown in the 400 with a season-fast 58.27 clocking.
In the 1,500 meters, two Gators established career-bests as Tanya Ferreira (Royal Oaks, Calif., North Monterey County HS) crossed the finish line in first place with a winning time of 4:54.20, while Sue Choi (Clovis, Calif., Buchanan HS) took third after clocking in at 4:58.79.
New season bests were also recorded by Kelsey Feeley (Palo Alto, Calif., Henry M. Gunn HS) (2:20.52), who finished second in the 800 and Stefeny Butler (San Jose, Calif., Mt. Pleasant HS) (59.44), who placed third in the 400. Meanwhile, Felicia Terwilliger (Eureka, Calif., Warwick (R.I.) West HS) posted a runner-up effort in the high jump, matching her season-high clearance of 5 feet, 5 inches.
SF State will return to action on Saturday, April 24, splitting the squad for a pair of meets in the East Bay. Select Gators will compete at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, while others will perform at the Mills College Open in Oakland.
