SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State women's track and field squad captured a pair of event titles on Saturday at the Johnny Mathis Invitational in Cox Stadium.
Luisa Musika (Milpitas, Calif., Milpitas HS) continued her stellar sophomore campaign, claiming the discus throw crown with a winning distance of 149 feet, three inches, while the quartet of
Brittany Johnson (Marina, Calif., Monte Vista Christian HS),
Alicia Chambers (Roseville, Calif., Oakmont HS),
Carrie Thomas (Milpitas, Calif., Milpitas HS) and
Stefeny Butler (San Jose, Calif., Mt. Pleasant HS) emerged triumphant in the 4x100 relay with a season-best time of 48.13 seconds.
In addition to her discus throw title, Musika placed second in the shot put with a toss of 40-10.25 to go along with her runner-up showing in Friday's hammer throw. Meanwhile, Johnson and Chambers each came away with fourth-place finishes in the 100 (12.73) and 400 meters (57.43), respectively.
In the high jump,
Felicia Terwilliger (Eureka, Calif., Warwick (R.I.) West HS) and
Meagen Moiola (Morro Bay, Calif., Morro Bay HS) were among a group of four competitors finishing in a tie for first place with a clearance of 5-05, joining Carrington Mahr of UC Davis and California's Kristin Rimbach. However, Mahr was declared the winner on jumps, while Terwilliger took second, followed by Rimbach and Moiola.
Elsewhere,
Tyler Dalbey (Petaluma, Calif., Santa Rosa JC) turned in a pair of third-place performances in the 100 and 400 hurdles. Dalbey clocked in with a personal-best 15.20 in the former event and just missed out on an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time in the latter by 0.38 seconds after crossing the finish line at 1:03.38.
Rounding out the list of Gator top five efforts were
Ashley Crittendon (San Francisco, Calif., College of San Mateo), who finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 35-00.25,
Brittany Garrett (Hoover, Ala., Univ. of Southern Mississippi) in the 1,500 (4
th, 4:39.68),
Samantha Eggert (Lincoln, Calif., Del Oro HS) in the 400 (5
th, 58.90) and
Cassie Freeman (Morro Bay, Calif., Morro Bay HS) in the discus (5
th, 118-04).
SF State, which competed in its final home meet of the 2010 campaign on Saturday, will be back in action next weekend when it heads to Southern California for the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational, April 9-10, on the campus of UCLA.
