LA JOLLA, Calif. – The San Francisco State women's track and field team picked up three additional all-league honors on Saturday during the final day of competition at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships on the UC San Diego campus.
Luisa Musika (Milpitas, Calif., Milpitas HS) recorded two career bests, finishing second and third in the shot put and hammer throw, respectively, while
Tyler Dalbey (Petaluma, Calif., Santa Rosa JC) was runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles as the top three placers in each individual event receive all-conference accolades.
Musika, who won the discus throw on Friday, logged a second-place and NCAA Division II provisional qualifying distance of 44 feet, 8.25 inches in the shot put, which is now second on the Gator all-time outdoor performance list, while her third-place mark of 155-10 in the hammer throw ranks fourth in school history.
Dalbey, meanwhile, became SF State's fifth All-CCAA performer for the weekend, joining Musika (three times) and
Lindsay Machado (Placerville, Calif., El Dorado HS), after crossing the tape in the 400 hurdles at 1 minute, 1.47 seconds to take second.
As a team, the Gators matched their highest finish in 12 years of CCAA competition with a fourth-place showing of 81.50 points, trailing league champion Chico State (212.33 pts.), UC San Diego (209.50 pts.) and Cal State L.A. (101.33 pts.), while Cal Poly Pomona (64 pts.), Cal State Stanislaus (53.33 pts.), Cal State Dominguez Hills, (50 pts.) and Humboldt State (47 pts.) rounded out the field.
“We had a fantastic weekend,” said SF State head coach Terry Burke. “Despite some illnesses, we a lot of people step up for us. “We scored in every event category and produced the highest point total ever for a Gator track and field team at the CCAA meet. I really believe we're turning the corner as a program.”
SF State also received a trio of fourth-place finishes from
Kelsey Feeley (Palo Alto, Calif., Henry M. Gunn HS) (800),
Brittany Garrett (Hoover, Ala., Univ. of Southern Mississippi) (1,500) and
Meagen Moiola (Morro Bay, Calif., Morro Bay HS) (high jump). Feeley logged a season-best time of 2:18.32, while Garrett clocked in at 4:39.18. On the field, Moiola, teammate
Felicia Terwilliger (Eureka, Calif., Warwick (R.I.) West HS) and two other high jumpers each posted a clearance of 5 feet, 3.25 inches, but Moiola was awarded fourth place and Terwilliger was seventh based on judge's decision.
In addition to Musika's effort in the hammer throw,
Cassie Freeman (Morro Bay, Calif., Cuesta JC) and Machado contributed to the Gator cause in the event, turning in career-best performances to finish fourth and fifth, respectively. Freeman posted a distance of 147-00, which ranks seventh in school history, while Machado turned in a mark of 138-05. Machado gained All-CCAA status on Friday with a second-place showing in the discus.
SF State also scored points in the 100 meters, the 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay.
Brittany Johnson (Marina, Calif., Monte Vista Christian HS) placed seventh in the 100 with a time of 12.84 and ran the opening leg of the 4x100 relay, joining
Samantha Eggert (Lincoln, Calif., Del Oro HS),
Carrie Thomas (Milpitas, Calif., Milpitas HS) and
Stefeny Butler (San Jose, Calif., Mt. Pleasant HS) to finish seventh at 48.69. In the final event of the day, Eggert, Butler, Dalbey and Thomas combined for a sixth-place result in the 4x400 with a 3:53.42 clocking.
