Iris Tolenada became the Gators’ all-time leader in assists last weekend after recording a pair of double-doubles in SF State’s five-set marathons at Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay. In two matches, the Gator setter totaled 103 helpers (10.30/set), scooped up 43 digs (4.30/set), while serving up four aces and finishing with three block assists. Against CSUMB, Tolenada posted team highs of 48 assists, 20 digs and three aces to go along with two block assists as the Purple and Gold rallied for a 3-2 victory. In a narrow defeat against CSUEB the following evening, the Antioch native directed an offense that set a season-high with 73 combined kills and led a defensive effort that totaled a season-best 107 digs after handing out 55 assists and collecting 23 scoops for her fifth straight double-double and 13th of the season.
With her performances, Tolenada now has 4,231 assists for her career and ranks second in school history with 1,170 digs. In addition, she enters this week’s matches against Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus tied for the top spot in the CCAA in assists (10.44/set), while her 29 service aces rank second.
