Arcata, Calif.--- Humboldt State's Kelsey Gomula connected on a penalty kick in the 86th minute to key the Lumberjacks' 2-1 win over the visiting SF State Gators (3-4-1, 2-2 CCAA) this afternoon in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match in Arcata. With the win, Humboldt State improves to 6-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the CCAA.
“The penalty kick came after a breakaway by Humboldt State, and the referee called the foul in the box on a call that could have gone either way,” said SF State Head Coach Jack Hyde. “We played well enough to get back into the game and I thought we were going to win it either in regulation or in overtime the way we were playing,” added Hyde. “If only we could that final four minutes back,” noted the Gators' mentor. “Robin's (Bowman) goal we manufactured really well to tie the game at 1-1.”
Sarah Nakamato put the Lumberjacks on the board first off a chipped shot in the seventh minute of the game. The game remained 1-0 Humboldt State, until the 83rd minute when Robin Bowman (San Francisco, California, Cal State Bakersfield) knocked in her own missed shot. Bowman had three of the Gators' eight shots with all three of them being shots on goal while Zoila Marquez (Salinas, California, North Salinas)recorded two shots.
SF State out shot the Lumberjacks 8-7 while recording four shots on goal to Humboldt State's two. Rachel Lauderdale (Mission Viejo, California, Laguna Hills) was in goal for the Gators while Kelly Sandberg had three saves in goal for Humboldt State.
The Gators return home this Friday, September 26th at 4pm for a CCAA match with Chico State at Cox Stadium. This will be the beginning of a three-game home stand for the Gators as they will also host Cal State Stanislaus (Sept. 28 at 12:30pm) and Academy of Art (Oct. 1 at 3pm).
