Nicole Vanni (Manteca, California, Sierra ), five minutes into the first overtime period to give the SF State women's soccer team (6-6-3, 4-5-2 CCAA) a 1-0 win over the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks. This was the Gators' seventh overtime game of the season and second against the Lumberjacks. Three weeks ago, Humboldt State (7-7-1, 4-6-1 CCAA) defeated the Gators 1-0 in double overtime in Arcata.
“This again was an outstanding total team effort by our girls,” said SF State head coach
Jack Hyde. “(It's) about time we won in overtime after seven overtime games,” added Hyde. “Myriah's (Johnson) was in the right place at the right time for the game-winner.”
Regulation was evenly played by both teams with the Gators out-shooting the Lumberjacks 12-7 including 6-2 in the second half. The two teams recorded five shots on goal each in regulation with the only shot on goal attempt in the overtime being Johnson's golden goal.
Annicia Jones (Sacramento, California, West Campus) had four saves en route to her fifth shutout of the season while Kelly Sandberg also had five saves in goal for Humboldt State.
With the victory and a 1-0 win by Sonoma State at Cal State Monterey Bay this afternoon, the Gators now are in a tie for second place with Sonoma State. Both teams are four points out of first place, which is currently held by Chico State (5-1-5 CCAA).
