Garcia-Whitney Combination Keys Warriors' 2-0 Win Over SF State

Carly Bliss and the Gators Continue Their Season Long Four-Game Road Trip this Sunday At No. 21 Chico State
TURLOCK.--- The Cal State Stanislaus duo of Lisa Garcia and April Whitney connected on both of the Warriors' goals in their 2-0 win over the visiting SF State Gators (3-6-2, 1-5-1 CCAA) at Warrior Stadium this afternoon in Turlock. With the win, the Warriors improve to 6-6 overall and 2-6 in the CCAA.
            “We played very well in the first, but just could not score the goal,” said SF State Head Coach Jack Hyde. “In the second half, we came out a little flat and Cal State Stanislaus stepped it up,” added Hyde. “Once again, it was a tale of two halves for us.”
            Zoila Marquez (Salinas, California, North Salinas) had the Gators' first chance sail wide on her in the first minute of the game and then eight minutes later; Carly Bliss (San Diego, California, Ranch Bernardo)header was stopped by the Warriors' Millie Brown. The Warriors' had a chance to score but Lisa Garcia's first shot on goal attempt was stopped by the Gators' Rachel Lauderdale (Mission Viejo, California, Laguna Hills).
            SF State had three more chances in the next 13 minutes sail wide on each by Allyson Freitas (Gardnerville, Nevada, Douglas), Andrea Carey, and Marquez. The Gators' next chance came in the 33rd minute, but Brown stopped Katie Voss (Pleasanton, California, Amador Valley) shot on goal attempt. That was the Gators' shot on goal attempt of the half as Cal State Stanislaus had one attempt by Marissa Dunaway that was saved by Lauderdale.
            Cal State Stanislaus came out strong in the second half. Alena Smajlagic had the Warriors' first shot on goal attempt which was stopped by Lauderdale in the 50th minute. In the 54th minute was the first time that the duo of Garcia and Whitney connected as Whitney sent a diagonal cross to a charging Garcia to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. 
            Nicole Vanni (Manteca, California, Sierra )attempt to tie the game for the Gators sailed wide and Allyson Freitas' shot was saved by Brown in the 74th minute. The Warriors sealed the win in the 88th minute, when Whitney's attempt was blocked by Lauderdale but Garcia connected off the miss for the Warriors' second goal of the game and her eighth of the season.

            The Gators were out-shot by Cal State Stanislaus 13-9, but SF State had a 7-4 advantage in the first half. The Warriors also had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks and 5-2 in shot on goals attempt. Lauderdale had three saves in goal for the Gators while Brown also had three in goal for Cal State Stanislaus.
            SF State finishes its season long four-game road trip this Sunday, October 4 for an 11:30am conference game at No. 21 Chico State in Chico, California. The Wildcats are currently CSU Monterey Bay in Chico.
