SEASIDE, Calif.--- With less than three minutes left n the second overtime, SF State junior
Myriah Johnson (Lakewood, Washington, Clover Park)scored the golden goal off a cross from
Nicole Vanni (Manteca, California, Sierra )to give the visiting Gators (8-6-3, 6-5-2 CCAA) the 2-1 win over the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters. SF State is now one point behind CCAA North Division Leader, Chico State, who tied Sonoma State this afternoon in Chico. The Wildcats have 21 points while the Gators have 20 points.
“Cal State Monterey Bay played well in the first half and we came out sluggish,” said SF State Head Coach
Jack Hyde. “We came out better in the second half and the two overtimes,” added Hyde. “This was another nail biter and it was a fantastic to way to end the game with (Myriah) Johnson scoring the golden goal.”
Two freshmen gave the Gators the early 1-0 lead when
Nicole Vanni connected on a cross from
Katie Voss (Pleasanton, California, Amador Valley) from the right side at the 16:30 mark. This was Vanni's third goal of the season and Voss' first assist. Seven minutes later, Cal State Monterey Bay (3-11-3, 2-9-2 CCAA) tied the game at 1-1 as Sarah Alderson connected on a header off a corner kick by Alyssa Matheson.
The game remained tied going into half-time with the Otters out-shooting SF State 9-2, but
Annicia Jones (Sacramento, California, West Campus) had all three of her saves in the first half to keep the home team from taking the lead.
The Gators had two chances right away in the second half to take the lead, but
Myriah Johnson's attempt sailed high and Voss' was saved by the Otters. Johnson had another attempt stopped by Cal State Monterey Bay's Andrea Davis in the 51
st minute to secure the 1-1 tie. The second half was dominated by the Gators as they out-shot Cal State Monterey Bay 7-2 including 4-1 in shot on goal attempts but they could not put the ball into the net as the game went into overtime.
In the first overtime, there were just three shot attempts. The first one came in the 94
th minute as
Kara Cunningham (Rohnert Park, California, Rancho Cotate) attempt was stopped by Davis. The Gators' second attempt was by Vanni but it sailed high in the 98
th minute. As the horn sounded to end the first overtime, the Otters' Allison James' attempt was stopped by the Gator defense.
That is when Johnson stepped up and recorded her second golden goal in a week as she connected on a cross by Vanni in the 107:46 mark of the second overtime period. This was Johnson's third goal of the season and Vanni's fourth assist. Vanni has been a part of the last four goals scored by the Gators either scoring them or assisting on them.
Annicia Jones had three saves in goal for the Gators and Andrea Davis had four in goal for Cal State Monterey Bay. The Otters recorded more corner kicks than SF State (7-3), but each team had 12 shot attempts. SF State did record more shot on goal attempts (7-6).
The two teams will return to the pitch this Sunday at 2pm for a rematch at SF State's Cox Stadium in San Francisco. This will be the beginning of a regular season ending three-game home stand for the Gators.
