Gator Women’s Soccer Falls to No. 1 Seattle Pacific, 1-0, in Tight Battle

Myriah Johnson and the Gators come home to face UC Santa Cruz on Tuesday.

SEATTLE The San Francisco State women's soccer team put forth a valiant effort, but it wasn't enough as the Gators dropped a tough 1-0 decision to top-ranked Seattle Pacific on Saturday evening at Interbay Stadium. With the loss, the Gators fall to 1-1 on the young season, while the Falcons improve to 2-0 overall.

“It was a very hard-fought game,” said SF State head coach Jack Hyde.  “We had a little letdown there late, but we showed a lot of promise.  “If we can play this way the rest of the season, the future bodes well for us.”

SPU's Hannah Masson tallied the lone goal of the contest in the 87th minute off of a Janae Godoy shot that hit the crossbar and bounced down just five yards in front of the net.  Masson promptly controlled the rebound and tapped in the loose ball which trickled just past the goal line.

The Falcons outshot the Gators 22-7, but maintained just a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Senior goalkeeper Rachel Lauderdale (Mission Viejo, California, Laguna Hills) made four saves on the evening, while her counterpart, Maddie Dickinson of SPU, made three stops of her own. Senior Zoila Marquez (Salinas, California, North Salinas) attempted a shot on goal in the 10th minute, while junior Myriah Johnson (Lakewood, Washington, Clover Park) and sophomore Michelle Mason (Valencia, California, Hart) registered the other two for the Gators in the second half.

SF State returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 1, when they play host to UC Santa Cruz in their 2009 home opener at Cox Stadium.  Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
