SAN FRANCISCO--- SF State's women's soccer took an early 2-0 lead in its home opener and held on for a 4-2 victory over the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs (0-1) to improve to 2-1 on the season in a non-conference match at Cox Stadium. Freshman
Nicole Vanni (Manteca, California, Sierra ) started the Gators' scoring with her first goal of her collegiate season off the first of two assists from
Myriah Johnson (Lakewood, Washington, Clover Park).
“After a flat first half, we picked it up a bit in the second half,” said SF State Head Coach
Jack Hyde. “It was a not a bad performance from the whole team this afternoon and we will now use the rest of the week to prepare for another important Division II West Regional match against Western Oregon this Sunday,” said Hyde.
The beginning of the first half saw both teams recording one shot in the first until the 16
th minute when Vanni on assist from Johnson. Three minutes later the Gators doubled their score as Johnson assisted on her second goal of the match on a ball to
Kara Cunningham (Rohnert Park, California, Rancho Cotate). UC Santa Cruz cut the Gator lead to 2-1 when Kira Ticus connected on a ball from Greta Brandt in the 32
nd minute.
SF State retook its two-goal advantage six minutes later as
Katie Voss (Pleasanton, California, Amador Valley) connected on her team high third goal of the season off a ball from Cunningham to give the Gators a 3-1 lead into the half.
Chloe Rose cut the hosts lead back to one (3-2) as she connected on an assist from Roxanne Beltran in the 55
th minute. Then with 68:01 on the clock,
Michelle Mason (Valencia, California, Hart) connected on her first goal of the season from mid-field to give the Gators a 4-2 lead, a lead they would not relinquish.
SF State out-shot its visitors 16-11 including 9-7 in shots on goal attempts. The Gators also had the advantage in corner kicks, 7-3.
In her first start of her career,
Annicia Jones (Sacramento, California, West Campus) recorded five saves in goal for the Gators while Janneke Lang had four saves in the net for the Banana Slugs.
The Gators will return home this Sunday afternoon at 12:30pm, when they host Western Oregon in an important West Regional match at Cox Stadium.
