LA JOLLA--- Freshman
Katie Voss (Pleasanton, California, Amador Valley) scored the game-winner with less than nine minutes left off a flick from
Myriah Johnson (Lakewood, Washington, Clover Park) to give the SF State Gators (3-1-1, 1-0 CCAA) a 1-0 conference opening victory over the No. 8 UC San Diego Tritons this afternoon in La Jolla, California. This was Voss' team leading fourth goal of the season and third game-winning goal while it was Johnson's team leading fourth assist of the season.
“
Katie Voss' goal was a fantastic game-winning shot after a flick from Myriah (Johnson) it went right into the back of the net and almost went right through the net,” said SF State Head Coach
Jack Hyde. “This was a nice win for the team as they did a great job preparing for this trip,” added Hyde. “I am really excited for them as they deserved this victory.”
The first was evenly played as both teams recorded four shot attempts with one being a shot on goal attempt by the Tritons' Ellen Wilson in the 18
th minute. UC San Diego had 11 shot attempts to the Gators' eight for the game including four by Sarah McTigue including one with five minutes left, which SF State's
Rachel Lauderdale (Mission Viejo, California, Laguna Hills) recorded one of her three saves on the night.
This was Lauderdale's first shutout of the season in goal for the Gators. Kristin Armstrong recorded just one save in goal for UC San Diego (2-1, 0-1 CCAA).
SF State will stay on the road this Sunday, when the Gators travel to Hayward, Calif., for a 11:30am starting match with the Cal State East Bay Pioneers, who lost 3-1 to Cal State Monterey Bay this afternoon at home.
