Gators Record 6th Straight Shutout

Annicia Jones Recorded 10 Saves En Route To Her 9th Shutout of the Season
POMONA, Calif.--- Playing in their sixth overtime game of the season, it was the SF State Gators tying Cal Poly Pomona 0-0 this afternoon at Kellogg Field in Pomona in a California Collegiate Athletic (CCAA) game. This was the Gators ninth shutout of the season and sixth straight. SF State (7-2-3, 6-2-2 CCAA) also has not lost a game since a 2-1 loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills, a string of six straight games. 

“Our whole defense played well for us this afternoon,” said SF State Head Coach Jack Hyde. “Helping out Annicia Jones with their stellar defense was Nicole Smith (Martinez, California, Alhambra),Sarah Whelan (Laguna Niguel, California, Dana Hills), Kaitlin Dick (Pleasant Hill, California, Berean Christian HS), and Lauren Duran (Poway, California, Poway),” added Hyde. “Those five kept us in the game.”

With the tie and Cal State Stanislaus tying at Sonoma State, the SF State Gators are now just two points out of first place in the CCAA North Division with six games remaining in the regular season.

Cal Poly Pomona (6-3-3, 4-3-3 CCAA) controlled most of the game as the Broncos outshot the Gators 21-6 including recording 10 shots on goals compared to SF State's three.

Annicia Jones (Sacramento, California, West Campus) recorded 10 saves in goal for the Gators to increase her school record for shutouts in a season to 9.

The Broncos had a chance to take the lead early in the game as Angela Garcia and Justine Barclay each had a shot on goal attempt in the sixth minute, but Jones recorded back to back saves to keep the game scoreless. 

SF State had its first shot on goal attempt in the 34th minute as Michelle Kay (Campbell, California, Presentation HS)attempt was stopped by Sarah Rohman. Michelle Spinner (Bakersfield, California, Stockdale)had the Gators' second attempt stopped by Rohman in the 81st minute. Jones then came up big for SF State in the final two minutes of regulation as she stopped both Maya Quinn and Gloria Gonzalez's attempts to break the scoreless tie to send the game into overtime.

In the first overtime period, Jones once again stopped Gonzalez's attempt in the 90th minute. Nicole Vanni (Manteca, California, Sierra )had her attempt for the golden goal and to give the Gators the road win stopped by Rohman, her third save of the game.

Once again in the second overtimes, Jones stopped Gonzalez's attempt early in the second overtime period. Then in the final minutes of the game, Kay's attempt went wide for the Gators.

SF State will return to the pitch this Friday, October 15th at 12:30pm in Seaside as the Gators face Cal State Monterey Bay. The two teams will then face each other on Sunday at 2pm in San Francisco at SF State's Cox Stadium.
