CHICO--- SF State's women's soccer team recorded their 11th shutout of the season in their 2-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) win at Chico State this evening. The Gators improve to 10-2-3 overall and 9-2-2 in the CCAA and are now 7-1-2 in their last 10 games. Also, SF State swept the season series from the Wildcats.
“This was a tough game for us this evening as Chico State had some decent opportunities, but
Annicia Jones (Sacramento, California, West Campus)came up big for some key saves,” said SF State Head Coach
Jack Hyde. “We made some key adjustments at halftime and it worked as both of our goals came from in behind Chico State's defense,” added Hyde. “
Michelle Kay (Campbell, California, Presentation HS),
Kaitlin Dick (Berean Christian HS), and
Sara Ordaz (Lodi, California, Tokay) stepped big for us in the second half that lead to our two goals.”
Carly Bliss (San Diego, California, Ranch Bernardo) had the Gators' first shot on goal attempt in the 10th minute, but Megan Foster came up with one of her two saves for the Wildcats (6-8-1, 5-7-1 CCAA). Chico State came right back, but Carly Singer's shot went wide. In the 24th minutes, Jones recorded one of her four saves as she stopped Singer's shot on goal attempt. SF State had two more chances by Bliss to take the lead but one was stopped by Foster and the other hit the cross bar to send the game scoreless into the half-time.
The Wildcats came out strong in the second half as they had three shot attempts of which two sailed high and one was stopped by Jones in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
Sara Ordaz then connected on a cross from
Lauren Duran (Poway, California, Poway) and
Michelle Kay that sailed past Foster to give the Gators a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute. The Gators doubled their score in the 68th minute as
Kaitlin Dick scored off a corner kick by
Andrea Carey.
Chico State's last attempt to score in the 88th minute, but Jones stopped Molly Downtain's attempt to put the Wildcats on the board and to preserve the 2-0 shutout for the Gators.
SF State, who is ranked fifth in the NCAA Division II West Regional rankings, will return to the pitch this Sunday at 11:30am for an important CCAA North Division game with Cal State Stanislaus. The Gators have a four-point advantage over the Warriors, who defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 3-1 this evening in Turlock.
