SAN FRANCISCO--- SF State's women's soccer team clinched the CCAA North Division and a berth in next week's CCAA Soccer Championships with a 3-0 win over the visiting Sonoma State Seawolves this afternoon at Crocker-Amazon Stadium in San Francisco. The Gators improve to 11-3-3 overall and 10-3-2 in the CCAA with the win while Sonoma State falls to 3-9-4 overall and 2-9-4 in the CCAA.
“This is a great accomplishment by our whole team,” said SF State Head Coach
Jack Hyde. “We have made some great developments this season from we started on August 16th,” added Hyde. “I am really pleased with how our young ladies have played this season,” noted the Gator head coach. “Today we made some adjustments which led to our three goals.”
The first half was evenly played until the 41st minute, when
Michelle Spinner (Bakersfield, California, Stockdale) connected what proved to be the game-winner and her 5th goal of the season off a ball from
Andrea Carey (Fresno, California, San Joaquin Memorial) and
Tamerra Griffin (Elk Grove, California, Laguna Creek) to give the Gators a 1-0 lead. Then three minutes later, the Gators doubled their score as
Michelle Kay (Campbell, California, Presentation HS) scored off a free kick by Carey for her second goal of the season.
The Gators made it 3-0 as Carey assisted on her third goal and her team high 7th of the season as she sent her corner kick to
Kaitlin Dick (Pleasant Hill, California, Berean Christian HS) for her third goal of the season.
SF State outshot Sonoma State 13-9 including 8-3 in the second half.
Annicia Jones (Sacramento, California, West Campus) recorded four saves en route to her 12th shutout of the season in goal for the Gators. Alexis Sciacqua had three saves in the first half while Courtney Grixti had two saves in the second half for Sonoma State.
The CCAA Soccer Championships will take place November 5-7 on the campus of Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock. Three of the four teams have been solidified now for the tournament with Cal State LA, UC San Diego, and SF State all locking their spots with the final spot being between Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Gators will return home this Sunday at 2pm for their final game of the regular season against Humboldt State, who lost 1-0 at Cal State Monterey Bay this afternoon. Prior to the game, the Gators will recognize both teams' seniors including their own in
