ROHNERT PARK, Calif.--- SF State recorded its fourth straight shutuout this afternoon with a 1-0 conference road victory over Sonoma State at Seawolf Soccer Field in Rohnert Park. This also was the Gators seven shutout of the season and fourth in a row as they improved to 6-2-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the CCAA.
“The second game of the weekend is always the toughest of the two,” said SF State Head Coach
Jack Hyde. "The team worked hard today and came up with a solution in the second half,” added Hyde“
Sonoma State (2-5-2, 1-5-2 CCAA) controlled the ball most of the first half as the Seawolves outshot the Gators 7-3 including 5-2 in shot on goal attempts. SF State did have the first chance to put the ball in the goal as Courtney Grixti stopped
Carly Bliss (San Diego, California, Ranch Bernardo)attempt.
The Seawolves came out strong in the second half, but
Annicia Jones (Sacramento, California, West Campus) recorded two saves. Then at the 61:16 mark of the second half,
Myriah Johnson (Lakewood, Washington, Clover Park)connected on her third goal of the season on a ball from
Sarah Whelan (Laguna Niguel, California, Dana Hills) in what proved to be the game-winner. “That was a great ball from
Sarah Whelan which
Myriah Johnson made an even better shot that looped over the keeper's head,” said Hyde.
Sonoma State outshot the Gators for the game 15-8 with each team recording six corner kicks for the game.
Jones had seven saves in goal for the Gators en route to her seventh shutout while Grixti had three in goal for Sonoma State.
The Gators continue their season-long five game road trip as they travel to Southern California for a pair of conference games next weekend beginning with Friday's game at Cal State San Bernardino at 3pm
