Johnson Scores Game-Winner in Gators 2-1 Win at No. 7 CSULA

Myriah Johnson Connected on What Proved to be the Game-Winner in SF State's Upset Win over Nationally Ranked Cal State LA
LOS ANGELES – With a little over 14 minutes left in regulation, SF State seniorMyriah Johnson (Lakewood, Washington, Clover Park)connected on a pass from Nicole Vanni (Manteca, California, Sierra )to give the Gators a 2-1 lead over the No. 7 Cal State LA Golden Eagles at Jesse Owens Stadium in Los Angeles, a lead they would hang onto to give SF State a 2-1 win over the Golden Eagles. SF State improves to 3-1-1 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA while the Golden Eagles suffered their first loss of the season and fell to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA.

Annicia Jones (Sacramento, California, West Campus)stepped up big for us in the second half and the whole team played with a lot of heart,” said SF State Head Coach Jack Hyde.

Cal State LA took an early 1-0 lead when Ann Marie Tangorra connected on a pass from Liz Franco in the sixth minute of the game. The rest of the first half just saw four more shots all by the Golden Eagles, which saw Jones record four of her season high 9 saves.

The Golden Eagles recorded the first two shots of the second half, but one went high and the other was saved by Jones. Myriah Johnson recorded the Gators' first shot on goal attempt in the 51st minute, but Gabriella Batmani stopped it from going in the goal.

The Gators' Carly Bliss (San Diego, California) put the Gators on the board in the 53rd when she rebounded a shot by Sarah Whelan to tie the game at 1-1. Jones came up big in the next 23 minutes as she recorded three more saves to keep the game tied at one.

Then in the 76th minute, Myriah Johnson connected on what proved to be the game-winner off an assist from Nicole Vanni. Jones made two more saves in the final 14 minutes to preserve the win for the Gators.

Cal State LA outshot the Gators 16-5 including 10-3 in the second half with Gabriella Batmani recording three saves in goal for the Golden Eagles.

SF State will return to the pitch this Sunday morning at 11:30am, when the Gators travel to Carson for a CCAA match with the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros, who defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 2-1 this evening in Carson.
