Women's Soccer Records 4th Shutout in 2-0 Win over Pioneers

Vanni Played A Part in Both Gators' Goals Today with the Game-Winning Goal and Also an Assist
SAN FRANCISCO--- SF State Gators recorded their fourth shutout of the season as they defeated the visiting Cal State East Bay Pioneers 2-0 this afternoon in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match at Cox Stadium. With the win, the Gators improve to 4-2-1 overall and 3-2 in the CCAA.

“We had several other players step it up today for us as had some key injuries this afternoon,” said SF State Head Coach Jack Hyde. “Everyone that played today did their job well and I am very pleased with the outcome.”

The first half saw just 12 shot attempts including three on goal (two by the Gators). Each team registered six attempts each with the Pioneers recording just one shot on goal attempts. Cal State East Bay's (4-3-1, 2-3 CCAA) only attempt came in the first minute as the Gators' Annicia Jones (Sacramento, California, West Campus) recorded one of her two saves on the day by stopping Eugenie Foote's attempt.

The game remained scoreless until the 47th minute, when Nicole Vanni (Manteca, California, Sierra )connected on a cross from Michelle Kay (Campbell, California, Presentation HS) to give the Gators a 1-0 lead. SF State kept the ball at its half of the pitch for most of the half as the Gator doubled its lead to 2-0 when Michelle Spinner (Bakersfield, California, Stockdale)connected on a pass from Vanni that went to Kara Cunningham (Rohnert Park, California, Rancho Cotate) which Spinner put in the net in the 78th minute. This was Spinner's first goal of the season.

That is how the game ended as the Gators blanked the Pioneers 2-0 with Jones recording her fourth shutout of the season. Donna Williams had two saves in goal for Cal State East Bay in 78 minutes while Nina Cefalo had one save in the final 11 minutes.

SF State , outshot the Pioneers 8-1 in the second half to claim a 14-7 advantage in shot attempts, will return home on Sunday at 2pm. The Gators will host UC San Diego on Sunday. The Tritons defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 4-1 this afternoon in Seaside.
