th minute in what proved to be the game-winner in the Gators' 2-1 victory over the visiting Chico State Wildcats this afternoon at Cox Stadium. With the win, SF State stays in the hunt for the CCAA Championships November 4-6 in Turlock, California.
“This was a hard fought competition against Chico State,” said SF State Head
Jack Hyde. “Everyone fought hard today to help us earn the 2-1 victory.”
SF State took the lead on a
Kiley Williams' corner kick that hit off the right post to go into the goal in the 19
th minute to give the Gators a 1-0 lead. Chico State (5-5-3, 5-4-2 CCAA) came right back and tied the game in the 20
th minute as Shelby Dunlap connected on a Danielle Leiva ball that went over the Gators' goalkeeper.
The Wildcats went to break the tie two minutes later, but Blake Lopes shot was stopped by SF State's
Annicia Jones.
SF State had chance to take the lead with 7 minutes left in the first half, but
Tamerra Griffin's shot attempt was stopped by Chico State's Brianna Furner.
Right before the half, Jones stopped another attempt by Lopes to send the game into the half tied at 1-1.
The game remained even early in the second half as each team had a shot on goal attempt stopped by the other's keeper to keep the match tied at 1-1.
Then at the 63:48 mark,
Justine Hernandez connected on a ball from
Kristen Powers for her third goal of the season to give the Gators a 2-1 lead.
SF State's defense stayed strong as the kept the Wildcats from crossing the ball into the net including three chances in the final 7 minutes as Jones stopped all three to preserve the 2-1 victory for the hosts.
The Gators (8-4-1, 6-2-3 CCAA) will look to continue their winning ways this Sunday, October 16 as they host Cal State Stanislaus in their final home match of the regular season at 2pm. Cal State Stanislaus defeated Cal Poly Pomona this afternoon 2-1 in Pomona.
