Box Score SAN FRANCISCO --- A penalty-kick goal by Melina Barragan in the 69th minute was the only score of the game in the Golden Eagles' 1-0 victory over San Francisco State Sunday afternoon. Cal State L.A. (6-2-2, 4-2-2 CCAA) extended its unbeaten streak to six games with the victory.
“We need to put our chances away,” said SF State Head Coach
Jack Hyde. “This afternoon was a better performance by the Gators.”
Cal State LA outshot the Gators 17-12 including 7-5 on shot on goal attempts.
Annicia Jones recorded 7 saves in goal for SF State, who falls to 6-3-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the CCAA.
Jessie Walworth recorded four saves en route the shutout victory for the Golden Eagles.
The Gators had two early chances to take the lead in the first half, but both
Kiley Williams and
Kara Cunningham's shot attempts went wide in the 11
th minute. Two minutes later,
Andrea Carey's corner kick was stopped by Walworth to keep the match at a scoreless tie.
With less than three minutes left in the half, Williams had her shot on goal attempt stopped by Walworth as the match went into the half tied at zero.
SF State came out on the attack in the second half, but
Kyleah Rozario's attempt in the 55
th minute was stopped by Walworth. Seven minute later,
Nicole Vanni's attempt went wide right.
With a little over 20 minutes left in the match, the Gators were called for tripping in the box to set up Barragan for the penalty kick. She connected as she her attempt went into the left side of the goal, for her second goal of the season.
The Golden Eagle defense held the Gators scoreless for the final 20 minutes as SF State had just three shot attempts including
Kaitlin Dick's attempt that stopped by Walworth in the 82
nd minute to preserve the 1-0 Golden Eagle victory.
SF State will return to the road this weekend as the Gators begin a brief two-game road trip starting with Cal State East Bay this Friday, October 7
th at 4:30pm in Hayward.
