No. 7 UC San Diego Sneak Past Gators

Annicia Jones Recorded a Season High 8 Saves in Goal for the Gators
Box Score LA JOLLA, Calif.---The No. 7 UC San Diego Tritons defeated the SF State Gators 1-0 this evening at the Triton Soccer Field as Jessica Wi scored the game-winner in the 70th minute.  With the win, the Tritons improved to 12-1-4 overall and 11-1-3 in the CCAA while sweeping the season series from SF State. 
 
“A very good match as we hung in right to the end,” said SF State Head Coach Jack Hyde.  “It was a hard fought match this evening and I am very pleased with the way we played.”
 
UC San Diego controlled the match as the hosts outshot the Gators 22-8 including 16-3 in the second half. 
 
SF State's defense held strong as the Gators recorded 9 saves including a season high 7 by Annicia Jones. 
 
Each team played a scoreless first half as the Gators' Elizet Ceja recording two shot attempts including one that was blocked by the Tritons' defense in the 21st minute.  Jones recorded two of her 8 saves in the first half to preserve the scoreless first half.
 
UC San Diego came out on the attack in the second half as they recorded two shot attempts in the first six minutes including one on goal by Cassie Callahan that was stopped by Jones in the 52nd minute. 
 
The Gators' first shot on goal attempt came in the 55th minute when Stephanie Vanni's attempt went high. 
 
SF State's first shot on goal attempt came in the 65th minute, when Chloe Harrington's attempt was stopped by Kristin Armstrong. 
 
UC San Diego had a chance to break the scoreless tie in the 68th minute, but Jones came up big as she stopped the Tritons' penalty kick attempt.  Two minutes later though, Jessica Wi gave the Tritons the 1-0 lead as she connected on an unassisted goal. 
 
The Gators had a chance to tie the game in the 86th minute, but Justine Hernandez's attempt was stopped by Armstrong as the Tritons held on for the 1-0 victory.
 
SF State (8-8-1, 6-8-1 CCAA) will return to the pitch for the final time this Sun., Oct. 30 at 2pm, when the Gators travel to Cal State San Bernardino for a CCAA regular season finale match with the Coyotes.  The Gators defeated the Coyotes 2-0 in San Francisco earlier in the season.  Cal Poly Pomona defeated the Coyotes 1-0 earlier this afternoon.
