Gators Fall 2-1 at Cal Poly Pomona

Mari Mendizabal Recorded Her First Assist of the Season in SF State's 2-1 Loss at CPP
Box Score POMONA, Calif. --- The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos used two second half goals to defeat the visiting SF State Gators, 2-1, this afternoon in a CCAA match at Kellogg Field in Pomona.  Justine Barclay was part of both of the Broncos' goals as she scored the first goal in the 50th minute and assisted on the second goal with less than 7 minutes left in the match.
 
“It was a very unfortunate loss for us this afternoon,” said SF State Head Coach Jack Hyde.  “We had a couple of injuries in our defense, which hurt us down the stretch.”
 
Cal Poly Pomona (7-2-3, 5-2-3 CCAA) controlled the first half as the Broncos outshot the Gators 7-3 including two to one in shot on goal attempts.  SF State's Annicia Jones stopped both of the Broncos' shot on goal attempts as the first one came off the foot of Christina Carriaga in the 14th minute.  Jones then came up big with a save with four minutes left in the first half to send the match into the half scoreless. 
 
The Broncos took the lead in the first five minutes of the second half as Justine Barclay scored her fourth goal of the season off a rebound off a missed shot by Tiffany Rogers off a corner kick by Jennifer Rivera.
 
SF State's Kiley Williams went to tie the game in the 62nd minute, but the Broncos' Sarah Rohman recorded one of her four saves of the day.  Three minutes later, Nicole Vanni had a chance to tie the game but Rohman came up with the save. 
 
Vanni had another chance stopped by Rohman in the 80th minute and then four minutes later Carriaga connected on a breakaway off a pass from Braclay to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage.
 
SF State (7-4-1, 5-4-1 CCAA) did not give up as the visitors cut the Broncos lead in half on a goal from Chloe Harrington off a pass from Mari Mendizabal with less than a minute left in the match. 
 
Cal Poly Pomona held on for the 2-1 victory as the Broncos ended up outshooting SF State 19-12 while also holding a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. 
 
The Gators will return home next weekend for their final two home matches of the 2011 regular season.  This Friday, the Gators will host Chico State at 3pm at Cox Stadium.  Then a week from today, SF State will host Cal State Stanislaus at 2pm.  Before Sunday's match, the Gators will recognize both team's seniors including their five in Andrea Carey, Kara Cunningham, Tamerra Griffin, Jourdan Huffstutler and Kiley Williams.
