th goal of the season and fifth game-winner in the Gators' 1-0 win over the visiting Sonoma State Seawolves. This was the Gators' 7
th shutout of the season and
Annicia Jones' 23
rd in her career at SF State. The Gators improved to 6-1-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the CCAA, while snapping the Seawolves' three-game winning streak.
“The team stepped in the second against a very good Sonoma State team,” said SF State Head Coach
Jack Hyde. “We received some contributions from our bench today that keyed our win.”
Sonoma State (3-4-1, 3-2-1 CCAA) outplayed the Gators in the first half as the Seawolves outshot their hosts 7-1 including four shot on goal attempts.
The Gators only shot on goal attempt came in the ninth minute as Alexis Sciacqua stopped
Chloe Harrington from giving SF State an early 1-0 lead.
Sonoma State came right back in the 19
th minute, but Jones stopped the Seawolves' Sara Studer attempt. Studer had another attempt stopped by Jones in the 22
nd minute. The Seawolves continued their attack but could not get the ball in the net as Jones stopped Kiley Brown's attempt in the 44
th minute to send the game scoreless into the half.
The Gators came out strong in the second half as
Elizet Ceja's attempt was blocked in the 48
th minute. Then three minutes later,
Kiley Williams had her attempt blocked also by the Seawolf defense.
The game remained scoreless until the 76
th minute, when
Nicole Vanni connected on a ball from
Elizet Ceja for what proved to be the game-winner.
Sonoma State only had one more shot on goal attempt in the 84
th minute, but Jones once again stopped Studer's attempt.
Jones recorded five saves in goal for the Gators while Sciacqua had three in goal for the Seawolves.
SF State will continue its seven-game home stand this Friday, Sept. 30 at 3pm, when the Gators host Cal State Dominguez Hills.
