For Second Straight Match, Vanni Scores Golden Goal in Gators' 1-0 Win Over CWU

Annicia Jones Recorded Her 20th Shutout in Her Two-Plus Year Career This Afternoon in SF State's 1-0 Win Over CWU
Box Score SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.----For the second straight game, SF State's  Nicole Vanni recorded the golden goal in the Gators' 1-0 double overtime victory over the visiting Central Washington Wildcats.  Vanni recorded the game-winner at the 104:31 mark of the second overtime period off a pass from Chloe Harrington as the Gators improve to 2-0.

"Our defense (Nicole Smith, Lauren Duran, Annicia Jones, Kristen Powers, Kaitlin Dick, and Tamerra Griffin) played solid this afternoon," said SF State Head Coach Jack Hyde.  "It is a great result for us to open the season 2-0 especially with this afternoon's win over a very good team in Central Washington."

SF State now has played in 10 overtime games in its last 23 games, a span of two years. 

The Gators outshot Central Washington (1-1-1) 14-9 including 11-6 in regulation.  They also recorded more corner kicks than the Wildcats, 6-0. 

Annicia Jones recorded five saves en route to her 20th shutout in her collegiate career at SF State including one in the final minute of regulation and the overtime period.  With 17 seconds left in regulation, Jones stopped Kelsy Villegas attempt to give the Wildcats the win.  Then at the 97:38 mark of the first overtime period, Jones stopped Carson McKole's attempt for the golden goal.

Michelle Kay had a chance to put the Gators on the board first in the 15:23 mark, but Kori Butterfield recorded one of her six saves.  Central Washington's Villegas attempt to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead was stopped by Jones in the 39th minute.  Then with four minutes left in the first half, Michelle Kay's attempt was stopped by CWU's defense.

The two teams played an even second half as the Gators only outshot their visitors 6-4.  Kiley Williams had her attempt to give the hosts an 1-0 lead witih five minutes, but her shot hit the crossbar.  

In the first overtime period, there was just two shot attempts by Central Washington including one by McKole that was stopped by Jones at the 97:38 mark.  

The Gators came out strong in the second overtime period.  Williams gave the Gators their first attempt in the second ten minute period, but it was stopped by Butterfield.  Two minutes later, Vanni scored the golden goal off a ball from Harrington.

SF State will return to the pitch this Friday at 12:30pm as the Gators begin CCAA play in Seaside, Calif., for a game with Cal State Monterey Bay.
