Williams Is The Hero This Time For the Gators

Kiley Williams Scored Her 1st Goal as a Gator This Afternoon and It Proved to be the Game-Winner
Box Score SEASIDE, Calif. --- For the third straight game, the SF State Gators(3-0, 1-0 CCAA)  went into double overtime and emerged victorious, defeating Cal State Monterey Bay, 1-0, on Friday at Otter Athletic Complex. The Gators' Kiley Williams scored the golden goal in the 108th minute off a free kick from 25 yards for her first goal in the Purple and the Gold. Annicia Jones had a season high eight saves for SF State en route to her third straight shutout in goal and 21st in her Gator career.

“It's like a flash of brilliance that will win games,” said SF State Head Coach Jack Hyde. “(Kiley) Williams' free kick with just 1:48 left was outside of the box from 25 yards out in front of 7 opponents that bent to the right into the right corner of the goal.”

Cal State Monterey Bay controlled the majority of the first half as the Otters outshot their guests 5-1 including 4-1 on shot on goal attempts.

The Gators had the offensive attack of the game stopped at the three-minute mark as they were called for offsides. The host school went on attack then and an attempt by Marlina Massagli denied by the Gators' Annicia Jones at the 11:54 mark of the game.

SF State came right back though and at the 17:51 mark, Mari Mendizabal's shot to place the visitors on the board first was stopped by the Otters' Kendra Gillio. The Gators continued its attack, but they were called for their second offside's call of the game at the 20 minute mark.

One minute later, the Otters' Cheryl Tom's attempt to score the game's first goal was stopped by Jones. Cal State Monterey Bay had three more shot attempts either stopped by Jones or go wide in the final 20 minutes of the first half.

The Otters continued controlling the game in the second half as they outshot their guests 5-1 including three to zero on shot on goal attempts.

Cal State Monterey Bay looked unknot the scoreless game, when Andrea Davis' shot went wide. Both team's defense did not allow another attempt until the 80th minute, when Jones stopped Gabriella Bozzo's shot on goal attempts. Kiley Williams looked to put the Gators on top 1-0, but her shot went wide in the 82nd minute.

The hosts had four more shot attempts in the final eight minutes, but they were stopped by the Gators' Jones to send the game into overtime.

SF State went on the offensive in the first 10-minute overtime period as the visitors outshot the hosts, 2-0. Four minutes into the extra session period, Chloe Harrington's looked to be the hero for the Gators but here attempt went wide. With three minutes left in the extra session, Jami Murray's attempt also went wide for the Gators to send the game into another second ten minute period.

The Otters' (1-1, 0-1 CCAA) Sherane Thompson had the first shot on goal attempt in the second overtime period stopped by Jones in the 102nd minute. Then with 1:48 to go in the game, Williams' free kick from 25 yards went into the right corner of the goal for the game winner.

SF State will look to continue its three-game winning streak this Sunday, Sept. 11 at 2pm, when the Gators host Cal Poly Pomona at Cox Stadium.
