Gators Rally Back To Defeat Chico State 2-1 Capped by Vanni's Game-Winner

Nicole Vanni Scored Her Team Leading 5th Goal of the Season and First Game-Winner at Chico This Afternoon
Box Score CHICO— With 44 seconds left in regulation, it was SF State senior forward Nicole Vanni connecting on her own missed shot to give the visitors a 2-1 come-from-behind road win at Chico State this afternoon.  Vanni also assisted on the game-tying goal in the 79th minute on a corner kick to Michelle Kay.

“No matter how you get it done, it just matters that you get the result,” said SF State head coach Jack Hyde.  “This was a great win for us.”

Vanni came out early firing for SF State (5-7-1, 3-7-1 CCAA) as she recorded the first shot of the match just 53 seconds into it as her attempt hit the post.  The Wildcats drove down the pitch and the Gators' Annicia Jones stopped Shelby Dunlap's attempt in the sixth minute to give the hosts the lead.

SF State continued its offensive attack as the Gators recorded five shots in the next nine minutes including two that were saved by Chico State's Brianna Furner.  The other three either went wide, high or was blocked.

Then in the 20th minute, Denni Joe Berger launched a corner kick inside the near post which Danielle Leiva flicked home to give Chico State the 1-0 lead.

SF State kept on battling as the Gators three shot attempts in the final minutes of the half stopped by the Wildcats' Furner.  Vanni had the first one in the 39th minute and then in the 40th minute, Chloe Harrington had her shot on goal attempt stopped by the Wildcat goalkeeper.  The visitors' final attempt that was stopped was off the foot of Mariela Holguin in the 41st minute to send match into half-time with a Chico State 1-0 lead.

Chico State (5-9, 3-8 CCAA) came out strong in the second half as the Gators' Jones stopped two Wildcat attempts in the first six minutes of the new half one by Courtlynn Cerrito and the other by Scotie Walker.

The game remained 1-0 Wildcats until the 79th minute when Michelle Kay scored her second goal of the season off a corner kick by Vanni to tie the match at 1-1.

The Wildcats attempted to take the lead back, but Cerritos' shot hit the crossbar and Berger's attempt sailed high in the 82nd minute.

Furner came up big twice in the 89th minute as she stopped both Kay's and Vanni's attempt for the game-winners, but Vanni finally connected at the 89:16 mark for her fifth goal of the season and the game-winner.

SF State, which snapped its four-match winless streak, outshot the Wildcats 17-14 including 10-4 in shot on goal attempts.  Chico State did hold a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.  Furner finished with 10 saves in goal for the hosts while Jones had four for the Gators.

The Gators will return home this Friday, October 19 as they begin a season-ending four-match home stand. SF State's first match of the home stand will be against Cal St. Monterey Bay beginning at 3pm at Cox Stadium on the campus of SF State.
