SAN FRANCISCO---- SF State's
Bria Adams connected off a cross from
Nicole Vanni with less than 25 seconds left to secure the Gators' 1-0 win over the visiting UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs this afternoon in SF State's home opener of the 2012 season.
“I am overall pleased with the way we stuck to the game plan this afternoon,” said SF State Head Coach
Jack Hyde. “We persevered throughout the match and came up with the 1-0 victory.”
The Gators (1-2) dominated the match as they outshot their visitors 22-4 including 8-2 in shots on goal. SF State also recorded more corner kicks, 7-3, than the Banana Slugs.
Annicia Jones had two saves in goal en route to her first shutout this season for the hosts while Monica Chazen had 8 saves in goal for UC Santa Cruz.
The Gators first chance to take the lead came in the 11
th minute as
Nicole Vanni had her shot stopped by Chazen. Then five minutes later,
Lauren Hayano had her chance to give the Gators the lead stopped by Chazen. Vanni had another shot get snagged by Chazen in the 31
st minute.
Then right before the half, Anisa Mahrham's header went high off of Vanni's corner kick to send the match into the second half with a scoreless tie.
UC Santa Cruz (3-3) had its first chance to take the lead in the 65
th minute as Taylor O'Meara's attempt was stopped by Jones. Five minutes later, the Gators had another chance to score but Chazen came up big stopping
Elizet Ceja's header.
The game remained scoreless until the final minute, when
Bria Adams connected on her first goal as a Gator off a cross from Vanni to give the hosts the 1-0 lead. “That was a great cross from Nicole (Vanni) for the game-winner by Bria (Adams),” added Hyde.
SF State will return to the pitch this Friday, September 14
th, when the Gators travel to Rohnert Park, Calif., for a 4pm starting conference match with No. 6 Sonoma State. They will then travel to Arcata, Calif., this Sunday, September 16
th for an 11:30am starting conference match with Humboldt State. SF State will return home on Friday, September 21
st for a 3pm starting conference match with Cal State San Bernardino.
