ARCATA, Calif.-- Elizet Ceja headed in what proved to be the game-winning goal with 47 seconds left in the match to key the visiting SF State Gators' 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the Humboldt State Lumberjacks this afternoon at College Creek Field in Arcata, Calif. The Gators were down 2-0 with 10 minutes left and scored three times to defeat the hosts.
“The players showed a lot of character this afternoon,” said SF State Head Coach
Jack Hyde. “We grew up in the second half and came back to score three times in the final 10 minutes for the victory.”
Humboldt State (0-2, 0-2 CCAA) took an 1-0 lead in the 16
th minute as Carly Koplin connected on her first goal off an assist from Tamra James. The hosts doubled their lead as Maddi Mull connected on a ball from Lizzie Mitchell in the 26
th minute to take a 2-0 lead.
SF State had a chance to cut into the Lumberjack lead in the 43
rd minute, but Kelly Lukas recorded one of her three saves on the day as she stopped
Nicole Vanni's shot attempt to send the game 2-0 Humboldt State into the half.
The Gators had another chance early in the second half to cut the hosts' lead in half, but
Chloe Harrington's attempt was stopped by Lukas in the 55
th minute.
The Lumberjacks came down the field and looked to take a 3-0 lead, but Savannah Havranek's attempt was stopped in the 56
th minute and Lizzie Mitchel's attempt ten seconds later was stopped by the Gators'
Annicia Jones.
The match remained 2-0 Humboldt State, until the 79
th minute when
Michelle Kay scored her second goal of the season to cut into the Lumberjack lead.
The Gators kept their offensive onslaught going as they tied the match three minutes later as
Justine Hernandez connected on an unassisted goal.
SF State won the match with less than a minute left as
Elizet Ceja connected on a free kick by
Nicole Vanni for the game-winner.
The visitors held a 20-10 advantage in shot attempts including 4-2 in shot on goal attempts. They also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Jones had two saves in goal for the Gators, who will return home this Friday, September 21 at 3pm, when they host Cal State San Bernardino at Cox Stadium. This is a rematch of a match from last Sunday, which the Coyotes won 4-1 in San Bernardino.
