SAN FRANCISCO---- The SF State Gators rallied from an early 1-0 first half deficit to defeat the visiting Cal State East Bay Pioneers 2-1 this afternoon in a CCAA match at Cox Stadium.
Elizet Ceja connected on what proved to be the game-winner off a corner kick from
Nicole Vanni in the 31
st minute.
“We had very good composure to come back from that early deficit,” said SF State assistant coach Robin Bowman. “This was a very good effort from the whole team.”
SF State had two chances in the first 10 minutes to take the early 1-0 lead, but
Mari Mendizabal and
Justine Hernandez's attempts each sailed wide left.
Cal State East Bay (3-4-1, 1-4-1 CCAA) took advantage of its attempt for the early lead as Ariana Goron connected off a ball from Zuly Diaz and Shianna Falk in the 15
th minute.
The Gators came right back though as
Nicole Vanni had her attempt to tie the game be blocked the Pioneer defense. Then in the 25
th minute, Cal State East Bay was called for a foul and
Stephanie Vanni connected on the free kick from 20 yards out to tie the match at 1-1. This was Vanni's first career goal as a Gator.
SF State (4-4, 2-4 CCAA) had two chances in the next ten minutes to take the lead, but
Graceann Rettig's attempt sailed high and
Lauren Hayano's attempt was stopped by the Pioneers' Jamie Botteon.
The hosts took the lead in the 31
st minute as
Elizet Ceja connected on a header off a corner kick by
Nicole Vanni to give the Gators a 2-1 lead a lead they would not relinquish.
Cal State East Bay had a chance to tie the game right before half, but the Gators'
Annicia Jones recorded one of three saves stopping Kara Yamamoto's attempt.
SF State had three chances in the 75
th minute to double its lead, but Botteon had three saves stopping
Jordan Salomon twice and
Nicole Vanni once.
The Pioneers had two three chances in the final 10 minutes to tie the match but the Gator defense came up big and held on for the 2-1 win.
The Gators outshot the Pioneers 24-11 including 13-7 in the second half and also held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Jamie Botteon had 8 saves in goal for the Pioneers while Jones had three in goal for the Gators.
SF State will begin a season-long five-match road trip beginning with this Sunday, September 30 at 2pm in Pomona. The Gators will face Cal Poly Pomona, who defeated Cal St. Monterey Bay 4-0 this afternoon, in a CCAA match.
