POMONA— Cal Poly Pomona held on to defeat the visiting SF State Gators 2-0 this afternoon at Kellogg Field in Pomona, Calif., this afternoon. Samantha Stiles scored the Broncos' goal in the 17
th minute and Aneska Alino sealed the match for the hosts in the 85
th minute.
Cal Poly Pomona (4-4-1, 2-4-1 CCAA) controlled the entire match as the hosts outshot their guests 18-9 including 8-6 in shot on goal attempts. The Broncos also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The hosts' Veronica Ramos' attempt to put them on the board early in the 12
th minute of the match was stopped by the Gators'
Annicia Jones. Cal Poly Pomona came right back down the field after the miss and took a 1-0 lead as Samantha Stiles tapped in Angela Garcia's cross in the 17
th minute. This was Stiles' second goal of the season.
The Gators had a chance to tie the match at 1-1 in the 24
th minute, but
Justine Hernandez's attempt sailed high over the goal. The guests had another attempt to tie the match sail high again, this time in the 31
st minute and off the foot of
Elizet Ceja.
SF State had three more chances to score stopped by the Bronco defense in the final minutes of the half. The first one was off the foot of
Jordan Salomon as Sarah Rohman stopped the ball from going into the net. Then nine seconds later, Ceja and
Lauren Floro each had their attempts stopped by the Bronco defense to send the match into the half with a 1-0 Bronco lead.
SF State (4-5, 2-5 CCAA) did not have another shot attempt until the 67
th minute when
Nicole Vanni's attempt was stopped by the Bronco defense. Then two minutes later,
Chloe Harrington had her attempt to tie the score for the Gators be blocked by the Broncos defensive attack.
In the 74
th minute,
Bria Adams had her shot on goal attempt stopped by Rohman. Then with a little under five minutes left, Aneska Alino sealed the win for the Broncos as she dribbled past two defenders and kicked the ball past Jones for her fourth goal of the season.
Rohman finished with three saves in goal for the Broncos while Jones had 8 saves in goal for SF State, who will continue their season-long five match road trip this Friday, October 5
th in Carson, Calif. The Gators will face Cal State Dominguez Hills in a 4:30pm CCAA match on the 5
th.
