Box Score LA JOLLA, Calif. – Gabi Hernandez connected on two of the No. 25 UC San Diego Tritons three goals to key their 3-0 victory over the visiting SF State Gators this evening in both team's conference opener at Triton Soccer Field in La Jolla, Calif.
"Our team played well first half but then faded as we had to work twice as hard as we gave the ball up too many times,” said SF State Head Coach
Jack Hyde.
SF State recorded the first shot attempt of the match in the sixth minute when Michelle Key's shot went wide right.
The Tritons came right back down the field and Danielle Dixon's attempt was stopped by the Gators'
Annicia Jones. The visitors had another chance to take the early lead but Kelcie Brodsky stopped
Chloe Harrington's attempt in the 11
th minute.
The match remained scoreless until the 19
th minute when Gabi Hernandez connected on the first of her two goals of the match off a corner kick by Hayley Johnson.
The Gators had a chance to tie the match in the 30
th minute, but
Justine Hernandez's attempt went wide right.
Jones once again stopped two back to back shots by the Tritons in the 34
th minute to keep the score 1-0 UC San Diego.
Hernandez had another chance to tie the game in the 36
th minute for the Gators, but her attempt was blocked by the Tritons' defense to keep the score at 1-0 UC San Diego (2-0, 1-0 CCAA) heading into the second half.
SF State (0-1, 0-1 CCAA) recorded the first shot attempt of the second half, seven minutes into the new period as
Nicole Vanni's attempt went high.
Eight minutes later, the Tritons' Hernandez recorded her third goal of the season and second of the match as she connected on a ball from Cassie Callahan.
The visitors looked cut the lead in half in the 77
th minute, but Brodsky stopped Hernandez's attempt.
UC San Diego sealed the win with a goal off the foot of Rachel Leslie on a ball from Alexa Enlow and Hayley Johnson to increase the hosts' lead to 3-0.
The Tritons outshot the Gators 16-6 and also had a 4-2 shot on goal attempt advantage.
Jones had four saves in goal for SF State while Brodsky had two for UC San Diego.
SF State will travel to San Bernardino, Calif., for a 2pm starting conference match with the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes this Sunday at Coyote Premier Field. The Coyotes defeated Cal Poly Pomona this afternoon 1-0 in San Bernardino.
