Gators Play Fourth Straight OT Match in 1-1 (2OT) Tie at UCSD

La JOLLA---  The visiting SF State Gators played in their seventh overtime match of the season and fourth straight this evening at Triton Soccer Field as they played to a 1-1 double overtime draw with the UC San Diego Tritons.  With the tie, the Gators keep their hopes alive for a berth in the CCAA Soccer Championships in two weeks in Turlock, Calif.
 
“It was as very competitive and even match this afternoon,” said SF State head coach Jack Hyde.  “We played very well with Mari Mendizabal, Nicole Smith and Elizet Ceja leading the way for us.”
 
The Gators (5-6-4, 4-6-3 CCAA) outshot their hosts 17-12 including 4-0 in the second overtime period.  UC San Diego did hold a 3-2 advantage in shot on goal attempts and a 12-7 corner kick advantage.
 
It looked like the visitors were going to take a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute, but Ceja's shot went wide right off a corner kick by Kelsey Wetzstein.  Ceja had another shot go wide right in the 19th minute.
 
SF State took the lead in the 28th minute when Wetzstein recorded her third assist on a corner kick as Stephanie Vanni connected on Wetzstein's corner kick into the near post.  This was Vanni's second goal of the season.
 
Wetzstein had another corner kick in the 38th minute, but this time her ball went to Nicole Smith and Smith's shot was blocked by the Triton defense.
 
With 30 seconds left in the half, UC San Diego (5-5-5, 4-4-5 CCAA) tied the match at 1-1 when Jessica Dang connected on a free kick into the upper right corner of the net.
 
The Gators had a chance to retake the lead 15 seconds later, but Ceja's shot sailed high to send the match tied 1-1 heading into the half.
 
UC San Diego had two chances in the 53rd minute to take the lead, but Allison Land recorded two of her three saves stopping Kiera Bocchino and Devin Roncoroni's attempts to give the Tritons a 2-1 lead.
 
Ceja had another chance to give the visitors the lead in the 65th minute, but Itzel Gonzalez stopped her shot to preserve the 1-1 tie.
 
SF State had had another shot on goal attempt in the 76th minute, but Gonzalez stopped Lauren Hayano's shot on goal attempt.
 
The match was sent into the sudden overtime period as the neither team recorded a shot on goal attempt in the final 14 minutes.
 
In the first extra-10 minute period, the Tritons recorded the only shot attempts in the 97th minute.  Kylene Hill's attempt sailed wide left and then 40 seconds later, Casey Parisi's shot attempt was blocked by the Gator defense.
 
The Gators came out firing in the second sudden death period as Chloe Harrington had her chance to be hero be blocked by the Triton defense in the first minute.  Less than thirty seconds later, Smith's attempt for the golden goal sailed wide right.
 
SF State had two more chances for the golden goal, but Mari Mendizabal's attempt was blocked in the 108th minute.  Then with a little over a minute left, Graceann Rettig's shot attempt wide right as the match ended in a 1-1 tie.
 
The Gators will return to the pitch this Sunday, October 27 at 2pm, when they travel to Pomona, Calif., to face the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos at Kellogg Field.  The Broncos defeated Cal State Monterey By 2-1 earlier today in Pomona.
