SEASIDE, Calif.— Cal State Monterey Bay's Jami Murray connected on a free kick from 25 yards for what proved to be the game-winner in the Otters' 1-0 win over the visiting SF State Gators at the 59:47 mark of the match. This was Murray's 7
th goal of the season for Cal State Monterey Bay who is now 4-4-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the CCAA.
"We had a chance to equalize on a nice ball from
Lauren Hayano to
Elizet Ceja, but it just missed going into the net," said SF State head coach
Jack Hyde. "If that would have gone in, we would have the momentum in the final minutes." "We played well, but it was another game that we just did not get the goal."
The Otters outshot SF State, 13-8 including 5-4 on shot on goal attempts. They also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The hosts had three chances in the first 10 minutes to score the first goal of the match, but the Gators'
Allison Land recorded three of her four saves. Two of the shot on goal attempts came off the foot of Chelsea Strange.
SF State had a chance to take the lead, but Sarah Guenseler's shot in the 23
rd minute was stopped by the Otters' Lily Garza.
The Gators had another chance in the 32
nd minute stopped by Garza, this time off the foot of
Justine Hernandez as the match went into the halftime scoreless.
The match remained scoreless until the 59
th minute, when the Gators were called for a foul and the Otters' Jami Murray connected on the free kick from 25 yards out to give the hosts the 1-0 lead.
The Gators had a chance to tie the match in the 75
th minute, but
Stephanie Vanni's sailed wide and then three minutes later Garza stopped
Mariela Holguin's shot.
At the 83:44 mark, the visitors had their final chance sail wide again off the foot of
Elizet Ceja as the Otters held on for the 1-0 victory.
Garza recorded five saves in goal for the Otters.
The Gators (2-5-2, 1-5-1 CCAA) will return home this Sunday, October 6 as they will face the Chico State Wildcats in a 2pm starting match at Cox Stadium on SF State's campus. The Wildcats will host Cal State San Bernardino later on this evening in Chico, Calif.
