SAN FRANCISCO--- Lauren Hayano connected on what proved to be the game-winner with 7 minutes off a corner kick from
Kelsey Wetzstein in the SF State Gators' 1-0 win over the visiting Chico State Wildcats this afternoon at Cox Stadium.
"We had outstanding games today by a good corp group of players in Nicole (Smith), Mari (Mendizabal), Elizet (Ceja), Allison (Land), Stephanie (Vanni) and Lauren (Hayano)," said SF State head coach
Jack Hyde. "That made the difference in this afternoon's win."
The win snapped the Gators' four-match winless streak and improved their record to 3-5-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the CCAA.
The Gators controlled the match as they had the advantage in corner kicks (6-1) and shots attempted (13-8). Each team recorded four shots on goal.
Chico State (4-5-1, 2-5-1 CCAA) had the first shot on goal attempt in the 22
nd minute of the match, but the Gators'
Allison Land recorded one of her four saves on the day. With her four saves, Land recorded her third shutout of the season.
SF State saw its only shot on goal attempt of the first half be stopped by the Wildcats' Brianna Furner in the 42
nd minute off the foot of
Mariela Holguin.
The Gators came out the 10-minute halftime on fire as
Justine Hernandez's attempt to give the hosts the lead was stopped by Furner in the 55
th minute. SF State had three shots sail high or be blocked in the 65
th minute.
Chico State had just two shot on goal attempts in the second half and they were stopped by Land. Both off the foot of Courtlynn Cerrito in the 76
th and 81
st minutes.
Then in the 83
rd minute,
Kelsey Wetzstein set her corner kick into the box which Hayano connected on for the game-winner. This was Hayano's first goal of the season.
Neither team recorded a shot in the final minutes as the Gators held on for the 1-0 win.
SF State will return to the pitch this Friday, October 11 in Arcata, Calif., for a 12:30pm starting match against Humboldt State. The Gators lost to the Lumberjacks 1-0 in San Francisco earlier this season.
