SF State's Second Half Surge Keys Gators' 2-1 Win

Stephanie Vanni Had The Game-Winning Goal for SF State in the 82nd Minute
Box Score  SAN FRANCISCO—  SF State scored two goals in the final 20 minutes to key the Gators' 2-1 win over the visiting Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles this afternoon at SF State's Cox Stadium.

“During the second half, we added a bit of toughness and the desire to win the ball better,” said SF State head coach Jack Hyde.  “We had two flashes of brilliance one by Stephanie (Vanni) and the other by Elizet (Ceja).”

The first 45 minutes saw 11 total shot attempts including six on goal.  Four of those shot on goal attempts came from the Golden Eagles.

The Gators (2-2-1, 1-2 CCAA) had a chance to take the lead stopped by Amanda Johnson in the 36th minute as Vanni tried to score off a free kick.

Cal State L.A. (2-3, 0-3 CCAA) came right down the pitch and tried to take the lead, but Allison Land recorded one of her season high 10 saves on the day.

The second half saw a couple of chances for the visitors to take the lead, but Land came up big for the hosts.

Then in the 70th minute, Elizet Ceja connected on a cross from Justine Hernandez to give the Gators a 1-0 lead.

The Gators did not held on to the lead for long as Amalia Arvidsson connected on her fourth goal of the season off a cross from Norie Pablo in the 79th minute.

Then with less than 9 minutes left in the match, Vanni connected on her first goal of the season on a free kick from 25 yards out from what proved to be the game-winner.

The Golden Eagles had four chances in the final minutes to tie the score, but the Gator defense came up big as they held on for the 2-1 win.

SF State will face Cal State Dominguez Hill this Sunday, Sept. 22nd at 2pm, in another CCAA match-up.  The Toros defeated the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay 2-1 in Seaside earlier this afternoon.
