Box Score HAYWARD--- In a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match-up at Pioneer Stadium in Hayward, Calif., it was the Cal State East Bay Pioneers defeating the visiting SF State Gators 3-0 as the Pioneers' Donna Williams had 8 saves en route to the shutout.
“It was one of those afternoons, where the goal would not just go for us,” said SF State head coach
Jack Hyde. “We came out strong in the second half, but we made two errors in the first half that the Pioneers capitalized on.”
SF State (2-4-2, 1-4-1 CCAA) held the advantage in every category but the most important one, goals. The Gators held a 16-11 in shot attempts, 8-1 in shot on goal attempts and 8-3 in corner kicks.
Cal State East Bay (2-6, 2-4 CCAA) scored its first goal in the 24
th minute as Sara Silva connected on a free kick from Sara Yamasaki to give the hosts the 1-0 lead.
SF State came right down the pitch following the goal and had two shot on goal attempt stopped by Williams, one off the foot of
Kelsey Wetzstein and the second one from
Chloe Harrington both in the 28
th minute.
Twenty seconds later, the Pioneers doubled their score as Bekah Anderson scored off a ball from Ariana Gordon.
SF State had a chance to cut into the Pioneer lead late in the half, but Williams snagged
Elizet Ceja's header in the 42
nd minute to send the match into the half with a 2-0 Pioneer lead.
The Gators came out firing early in the second half as Wetzstein had her shot blocked by the Pioneer defense and then Williams stopped Ceja's shot to cut into the Cal State East Bay lead.
The Pioneers sealed the win in the 54
th minute as Megan Ravenscroft connected on an unassisted goal to give the hosts a 3-0 lead.
SF State had several more chances to take that zero off the board, but Williams came up big on
Julie Haselton's attempts twice and Wetzstein's attempt hit the post as the Pioneers held on for the 3-0 win.
The Gators will continue their three-game road trip this coming Friday, October 4 in Seaside, Calif., for a 3pm starting match with the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters. They will return home one week from today for a 2pm match with Chico State.
