SAN FRANCISCO – SF State's
Sam Merritt connected on a ball from
James Aguirre in the 92
nd minute for the golden goal to give the Gators a 1-0 win over the visiting Hawai'i-Hilo Vulcans in this afternoon's non-conference mid-week match.
The Gators (7-6-2) outshot their visitors 21-7 including 14-4 in the final 47 minutes. SF State had an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Daniel Boyer had one save in the first for the victors while
Colt Reichl recorded one save in the final 47 minutes.
SF State had two chances in the first 12 minutes of the match as
Jakob Velega had his shot stopped by Tyler Hoffman in the 12
th minute. Then less than ten seconds later,
Sam Merritt saw his shot sail high.
Rhyen Eugenio had a chance to give the Vulcans (5-7-1) the lead, but
Daniel Boyer recorded his only save in the 32
nd minute.
SF State had one more chance before the half ended for the lead when
James Aguirre's shot was stopped by Hoffman as the match went into the half tied at zero.
The Gators once again had three chances to take the lead in the 60
th minutes, but
Kevin Johnson's shot was stopped by Hoffman,
Nick Harb's shot was blocked and
Cory Rodas's shot was stopped by Hoffman.
The victors had another chance in the 76
th minute for the lead when
Cameron DeJong's shot was blocked by the Vulcan defense.
Colt Reichl recorded his save of the day in the 85
th minute as he preserved the shutout making a snag of Mike Reckmeyer's shot attempt to give the Vulcans the lead.
SF State came right down the pitch and had three chances for the lead, but Johnson's shot was blocked, Aguirre's shot was saved by the Vulcan defense and
Emmanuel Serrano's shot was stopped by Hoffman to send the match into overtime.
In the first minute of the overtime,
Adam Lenth saw his attempt for the golden goal be stopped by Hoffman. Then less than a minute later,
Sam Merritt recorded his fourth goal of the season off a ball from Aguirre for the golden goal.
SF State will return to the pitch this Friday, October 24 at 7pm for a CCAA match with Chico State in Chico, Calif.
