@SFState_WSOC Comes Up Short In Double Overtime

San Francisco – The SF State women's soccer team battled hard all afternoon going into double over time with rival Sonoma State.  In the end a loose ball found its way to the foot of Seawolves leading scorer Lauren Curtin, who scored the winning goal in the 102nd minute, as the Gators fell 3-2.

On senior day the Gators (7-9-2/2-8-1 CCAA) gave the Seawolves (14-4-0/7-4-0 CCAA) everything they had.  SF State jumped out to the early lead when senior Elizet Ceja scored the first of her two goals, redirecting a free kick off the leg of fellow senior Stephanie Vanni, with her head to beat the keeper for the early 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.

The Gators 1-0 lead held for the rest of the first half.  In the second half the Seawolves came out and set the momentum early.  Holding a 10-3 shot advantage, Sonoma State scored a pair of Goals in less than two minutes.

Cecilia Sifuentes scored the equalizer on an assist by Ashley Luis in the 57th minute.  One minute and 29 seconds later the Seawolves took the brief lead with a goal by Marissa Marable who took a rebound and sent it past a diving Allison Land.

Less than 10 minutes later the combo of Ceja and Vanni struck again, once again Ceja took a cross and headed the ball past SSU keeper Allison Hadidian.  The goal gave Ceja her sixth and final goal of the season, while the two assists gave Vanni three on the year.

The Gators stalwart keeper, Land, was fantastic in the losing effort.  She finished the afternoon recording seven saves, none bigger than the penalty kick she thwarted by Curtin in the 97th minute of the first overtime giving the Gators a brief reprieve.

On the afternoon the Gators attack produced eight shots, three on goal.  Ceja collected five, while Brittany Oldham, Sarah Guensler, and Shannon Rauschnot all tallied a shot attempt.

Before Thursday's match the Gators paid tribute to their four seniors, Ceja, Vanni, Land, and Allison Taylor.
