SAN LUIS OBISPO –The SF State Gator grapplers opened up their 2014-15 dual season by winning 7 of the 10 matches with the hosts Cal Poly Mustangs 24-9. The Gators (1-0) won six of their matches by decision including Johnathan Costa at 184 by a 6-5 decision.
Jordan Gurrola won his dual by fall at 133.
"Our guys showed up with a chip on their shoulder and wanted to win, wrestled to win and earned the win," said SF State head coach
Lars Jensen. "It was a great showing by the Gators and we're ready to keep it rolling."
This evening's win was only the second win by the Gators over the Mustangs in 42 times between the two teams. SF State avenged last year's lost to the Mustangs by tie-breaker in San Francisco.
The Mustangs started the dual with a 3-2 win by sudden victory by Nicolas Johnson over the Gators'
Sam Alnassiri at 285. SF State then won the next five matches in a row to take an 18-3 lead.
Brandon Vu (6-1) won his match at 124 by a 12-10 decision over Yoshi Funakoshi.
Jordan Gurrola improved to 4-1 with a win by injury default over Jason Delacruz.
SF State's
Daniel Flores won his first match of the season with a 10-3 win over Victor Trujillo.
Tavis Ino then won by a 3-1 decision at 149 to improve to 4-1.
Alex Abono also won his first match this year by a 5-2 decision at 157.
Cal Poly (0-2) won the next two bouts to cut the Gator lead to 18-9.
SF State sealed the win with a 12-10 sudden victory win by
Johnathon Costa over Nick Fiegener, who was the 2014 State of California Champion.
Andrew Reggi (1-0) won the final bout of the dual by an 8-2 decision over the Mustangs' JT Goodwin.
The Gators will return to the mats on Sunday, November 16 as they will participate in the Roadrunner Open in Fresno, Calif. Their next dual will be on December 13 at Simpson University.
