SAN FRANCISCO – SF State Gators' wrestling team will return to the mat Saturday, December 13 at 2pm, when they face the Simpson University Redhawks in Redding, Calif., for a non-conference dual. The Redhawks are currently 14
th in the nation in the most recent NAIA rankings.
SF State is coming off a weekend in which the Gators participated in the most prestigious tournament of their season in the 33
rd Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
Alex Abono and
Jordan Gurrola led the way for the Gators as they went 2-2 at their respective weight classes.
Daniel Flores and
Andrew Reggi, who is currently ranked seventh in the nation, both went 1-2. As a team, the Gators tied for 33
rd out of 37 teams at the predominately NCAA Division I Invitational.
Prior to the Las Vegas Invitational, SF State had a strong showing at the NorCal Open on November 22 in Redding, Calif. The Gators had five placers including
Jordan Gurrola, who captured the title at 133.
Peter Santos was a runner-up at 174 while
Johnny Costa (184) and
Jerry DeLaRosa (141) each finished third.
Tavis Ino was a fourth place finisher at 149.
Before going to Redding, SF State had another strong performance at the Roadrunner Open in Fresno, Calif., in which the Gators'
Andrew Reggi placed fifth at 197 by going 4-2 to improve to 5-2 on the season. Seven other Gators recorded at least two wins at the Roadrunner Open in
Vicente Aboytes (3-2),
Sam Alnassiri (2-2),
Jerry DeLaRosa (2-2),
Dylan Furtado (2-2),
Jordan Gurrola (3-2) and
Peter Santos (3-2).
Prior to participating in the Roadrunner Open, the Gators defeated Cal Poly 24-9 in San Luis Obispo, Calif., for just the second time in 44 tries. SF State captured seven of the 10 matches including Costa winning by a 6-5 decision at 184.
To begin the season, SF State had six placers in the U21 JC/College Open that they hosted on November 2. Gurrola, Ino and
Sam Alnassiri each finished second while Vu, Costa and Furtado finished in third place.
Gurrola leads the team with his 13-5 record at 133 while Costa is 9-6 at 184 and Ino is 8-7 at 149. Other Gators with winning records this season are: Abono (3-2), DeLaRosa (8-5), Furtado (7-3), Reggi (6-4), Santos (6-5) and Vu (9-5).
Simpson University is led by four grapplers that are ranked in the nation in the top 15. AJ Valles is 3
rd at 141 followed by Brady Deamon 4
th at 184, Austin Lobsinger 6
th at 197 and Mason Sauseda is 11
th at 125. The Gators swept the Redhawks last season winning 33-12 in Redding and 51-0 in San Francisco.
After this weekend, SF State is off until January 3, 2015 when the Gators participate in the Menlo Invitational in Atherton, Calif.
