SAN FRANCISCO – In both team's 2014 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) openers, the SF State Gators and the visiting Cal State Stanislaus Warriors played to a scoreless double overtime tie this afternoon at SF State's Cox Stadium.
This was the Gators' fourth shutout of the season and goalkeeper's
Daniel Boyer's 3.5 of the season. With the shutout, Boyer's goal against average is now at 0.32. The Gators' defense is allowing 0.40 goals a match heading into their Sunday morning match at 11:30am with Cal State East Bay.
SF State (4-1-2, 0-0-1 CCAA) held a 16-12 advantage in shots including a 10-5 in shots on goal. The Gators also held a 9-2 corner kick advantage.
Boyer had five saves in goal for the Gators while Russ Klabough had 10 in goal for the Warriors (2-3-2, 0-0-1 CCAA).
The first half saw just a total of six shot chances by both teams including two on goal by the Gators.
Sam Merritt had two chances to give the Gators a 1-0 lead in the first half one in the second minute and the last one in the 42
nd minute, but the Warriors' Russ Klabough stopped both attempts of giving the hosts the lead.
In the second half, the Gators held a 6-5 advantage in shot attempts. A header shot by
Max Talbert looked like it was going to give SF State the lead, but it sailed high in the 75
th minute.
Then a minute later, Merritt had his shot attempt stopped by Klabough.
He Gators had two more chances to take the lead, but
Jakob Velega's shot sailed wide right and
Andy Gomez's shot was stopped by Klaubaugh in the 83
rd minute.
The Warriors had their chance for the game-winner sail wide right in the 89
th minute off the foot of Jose Acosta.
In the first overtime, Talbert had another chance to be the savior for the Gators but his shot was stopped by Klabough in the 92
nd minute.
Cory Rodas had two chances to give the hosts the victory, Klabough once again came up big in the 94
th and 99
th minutes.
The Warriors' Luis Hernandez had two chances to be the hero for the visitors but
Daniel Boyer stopped both in the 96
th minute to send the match into the second overtime period.
In the second overtime period, the Gators had their only chance for the golden goal be snagged by the Warriors' goalkeeper in the 106
th minute off the foot of
Matias Rodriguez.
Boyer finished with five saves in goal for the Gators while Klabough had 10 in goal for the visitors.
SF State will return to the pitch this Sunday morning at 11:30am when the Gators host Cal State East Bay.
