SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State Gators will look to get back on the winning as they will return to the mat this Saturday, January 17 in Kearney, Neb., as they will participate in the UNK Duals at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds. The Gators will face Adams State (9am CT), Chadron State (11am CT), Colorado School Mines (2pm CT) and
New Mexico Highlands (4pm CT).
After going 0-2 in their two duals against Nationally Ranked Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) opponents in Grand Junction, Colo., the Gators fell to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the RMAC in duals. SF State lost 31-6 to then No. 8 Western State Colo. The two Gator grapplers that were victorious against the Mountaineers were
Jordan Gurrola by a 9-6 decision at 133 over sixth ranked Zach Shank and
Peter Santos by a 6-0 decision at 174.
SF State then lost to Colorado Mesa by a 35-7 with Santos and
Andrew Reggi winning at 174 and 197 respectively. Santos won by a 9-1 major decision while Reggi was a 7-0 winner.
With his two wins last weekend, Santos improves to 11-7 on the season including three wins by fall. Reggi is now 11-5 and has won twice by pins while Gurrola is now 15-6 with 7 wins by pin. His 7 wins by fall ties him with
Dylan Furtado (12-5).
Reggi is also ranked sixth nationally at 197 with the next nationally rankings being released later this week.
Other Gator grapplers with at least double digits wins this season are
Johnny Costa (10-8),
Tavis Ino (10-10) and
Brandon Vu (12-9).
Adams State has not wrestled in any duals this past season and is coming a performance at the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., on Dec. 29-30. The Grizzlies will face Colorado State-Pueblo this Thursday, January 15 in Pueblo in their first dual of the season. They are led by Gerald Huff who is currently third in the nation at 125.
Chadron State Eagles are 4-3 after losing 31-15 to Augustana (SD). The Eagles will face Colorado Mesa this Thursday at home in their first conference dual of the season. They are led by Jacob Anderson who is 15-4 at 149.
New Mexico Highlands is 5-0 after defeating Simon Fraser 33-9. The Cowboys are led by Cody Marquez (14-3, 285), Luis Terrazas (13-4 at 184/197) and Mariano Montoya (10-5 at 165).
Colorado School of Mines Orediggers are 1-1 after participating in the Cusatis Open in Hastings, Neb., this past weekend. The Orediggers are led by Skyler Lykins who is 8-4 at 149 and Paul Wilson who is 8-5 at 197.
After this weekend, SF State will host Embry-Riddle on Friday, January 23 at noon when the Gators host the Eagles at the Main Gym at the Don Nasser Famly Plaza.
