KEARNEY, Neb. – The SF State Gators improved to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference as they went a perfect 4-0 at the Second Annual UNK Midwest Duals in Kearney, Neb., this afternoon. Six Gators went a perfect 4-0 in their matches in
Jordan Gurrola,
Daniel Flores,
Alex Abono,
Peter Santos,
Andrew Reggi and
Sam Alnassiri.
Abono improved to 8-2 on the season at 157 as he won two of his matches by fall, one by technical fall and one by major decision. The redshirt sophomore now has recorded two wins by pins this season. Of his four wins, two were against two All-Americans. He defeated Justin Samora by fall at 5:49 in the Gators' 43-4 win over Adams State. Then in the Gators' final dual of the day, he won by a 15-0 major decision over the Orediggers' John Crowley in SF State's 31-7 victory.
Flores (8-5) started his day with a win by fall at 5:13 and then won his two matches all by decisions. Santos continued his winning ways as he improved to 15-7 with two wins by falls. The transfer at 174 now has five wins by fall.
Reggi, who is currently ranked eighth in the nation at 197, is now 15-5 after his four wins at the Duals (two by decisions, one by major decision and one by technical fall). Alnassiri is now 11-9 as he won three of his matches by fall to give him five on the year including the final bout of the day a win by fall at 4:26 over Nick DeBruyn of Colorado School of Mines.
Jordan Gurrola (19-6) his day with a win by forfeit against Adams State. He then won by an 8-2 decision over the Eagles' Taylor Summers. Gurrola then won his eighth win by fall at 6:25 over New Mexico Highland's Tre Murphy.
Three Gator grapplers went 3-1 on the day in
Brandon Vu (15-10),
Vicente Aboytes (11-9) and
Johnny Costa (13-9).
The Gators will return to the mat this Friday, January 23 at noon, when they host the Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) Eagles. The Eagles are currently ranked 9
th in the NAIA wrestling team rankings that were released on December 31.
