@SFState_WRSTL Begins Busy Weekend With Pair of Duals this Friday Afternoon

Johnny Costa and his Gator Teammates Will Host The 39th Annual California Collegiates This Saturday

SAN FRANCISCO –  The SF State Gators will have a busy week as they will host a pair of duals and the 39th Annual California Collegiate Open this weekend. The Gators will host Cal Baptist and Simon Fraser this Friday, January 30 at 2:30pm and 4pm respectively.  Then this Saturday, January 31, SF State will host the 39th Annual California Collegiates also at 9am. 

SF State, under the direction of head coach Lars Jensen, is coming off a 1-1 in which they defeated Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) 36-9 and lost to Cal State Bakersfield 20-12.  In the Gators' win over the Eagles (who are ninth in the nation in NAIA), SF State captured eighth of the ten bouts including Jordan Gurrola's ninth win by fall at 133.  Also winning for the Gators was: Dylan Furtado (149), Alex Abono (157), Vicente Aboytes (165), Peter Santos (174), Andrew Reggi (197), Sam Alnassiri (285) and Daniel Flores (141). 

Then in their 20-12 loss at NCAA Division I Cal State Bakersfield, the Gators won four of the ten bouts including Sam Alnassiri winning by a 2-1 decision in the third overtime at 285. The three other Gator winners were Abono (157), Flores (141) and Johnny Costa (184).  Four of the Gator losses were by just one point as they fell to 7-3 in duals.

12 Gators have compiled winning records this season led by Gurrola's 20-7 record.  Right behind Gurrola is Andrew Reggi (197) and Santos who are 16-6 and 16-8 respectively.  Next is Brandon Vu (15-12 at 125) with Costa (14-10) behind him followed by Furtado (13-5), Aboytes (13-10) and Alnassiri (13-9).  Abono is next on the team with his 10-2 record while Flores is 10-5.  Jerry DeLaRosa (141) and Zac Contreras (157) each have compiled winning records going 8-7 and 6-3 respectively while Tavis Ino is 11-14 at 149. 

SF State has compiled 45 wins by fall this season with Gurrola leading the way with 9.  Furtado has 7 wins by fall with Santos next with 6 while Alnassiri has 5. 
Andrew Reggi is currently ranked eighth in the nation at 197. 

The Gators will start this weekend with a dual at 2:30pm against Cal Baptist on Friday.  The Lancers are 11-4 in duals while going 5-2 in the RMAC.  Nolan Kistler leads the way for Cal Baptist with his 18-10 record at 157 followed by Matt Hickman who is 17-1 at 149.  Four Lancer grapplers have 16 wins in David Dill (285), Paul Head (197), Christian Smith (174) and Jacob Waste (184). 

SF State will then face Simon Fraser at 4pm.  The Clan are 1-3 in duals and are led by Josh Kim who finished 4th at the Clackamas Open on January 25 at 184.  He also captured the Boxer Open earlier this season.  Ben Smyth finished fourth at the Clakamas Open at 197.

Cal Baptist and Simon Fraser will face each other at 1pm and the Clan will also face Minnesota State-Moorhead at 2:30pm.

The Gator grapplers will host the 39th Annual California Collegiates this Saturday, January 31 beginning at 9am.  Of the teams participating in this year's Collegiates will be Cal Baptist, Cal State Bakersfield, Minnesota State Moorhead, Cal Poly, Stanford, Arizona State, Simon Fraser, Boise State, Oregon State and Southern Oregon.
