On the Gators' Senior Day it was two freshmen that came up big just 42 seconds into the first overtime period as
Jordan Wusstig connected on a cross from
Robert Kelly to give the SF State Gators a 1-0 victory over the No. 17 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos on SF State's Senior Day at Cox Stadium. With the win, the Gators finished their home part of their schedule with a 5-2-2 record and also recorded their ninth shutout of the season.
The Gators (7-6-3, 3-5-3 CCAA) secured their second straight winning season with the victory as they recorded four shots on goal to Cal Poly Pomona's three. Each team recorded five corner kicks while the Broncos had 12 shot attempts to their hosts 10.
Prior to the match, the Gators recognized their nine seniors in
Daniel Boyer,
Gerry Cruz,
Kevin Esquivel,
Sam Merritt,
Cory Rodas,
Joe Rousseau,
Max Talbert,
Daniel Totays and
Jakob Velega in a brief ceremony.
The first half saw 10 combined shots by the two teams including five shots on goal. Jake NOkes recorded the first shot on goal by the Gators, but Fernando Pablo Quevedo recorded one his three saves on the day in the 18
th minute. The Broncos (9-2-3, 6-2-2 CCAA) first attempt came in the 28
th minute when
Emmanuel Jimenez recorded one of his three saves by stopping Michael Torres attempt to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
25 seconds later
Daniel Herrera had a chance to give SF State a lead, but the Bronco goalkeeper came up with the stop. Patricio Yrizer saw his attempt to give the visitors the lead, but his shot sailed high as the match went into the second half scoreless.
Early in the second half, Ayden Bowers had a chance for his first goal of the season but it sailed wide right in the 47
th minute. In the 56
th minute, Aaron Macedo looked like he was going to give the visitors a lead but Jimenez made another save.
Each defense did not allow another shot on goal in the final 30 minutes of the regulation, but Merritt had a chance to score the game-winner in the final minutes of regulation but his attempt sailed high over the net as the match went into overtime scoreless. That is when Wusstig scored the golden goal off a ball from Kelly for his first collegiate goal.
SF State will finish off the regular season this Saturday, October 31 in Chico, Calif., for a 4:30pm starting match with the Chico State Wildcats.
